I worked at OICR full-time for less than a year

    Pros

+ really supportive of professional development + surrounded by supportive and intelligent coworkers + a lot of effort to try diversify principal investigators

    Cons

    - not much space to grow - not too diverse principal investigators (but there is a lot of effort to fill this gap)

I worked at OICR full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

    Good benefits package and pension

    Cons

Poor management and strategic steer, OICR 'lifers' unwilling to change practice and culture to embrace innovation, huge focus on reporting rather than scientific quality, poor diversity at management level, no career progression or support for junior scientists, unwillingness to reach out to engage/ collaborate with the wider scientific community for opportunities, stifling/ depressing culture generally

    Advice to Management

Revise your strategy, not to fit and justify what you already have but to be brave and commit to developing areas where you actually have talent (e.g. Drug discovery), invest in your junior researchers, especially those for non-traditional backgrounds, with mentoring, funding and learning opportunities to become your next leaders
