    Technical Account Manager

Being a woman in tech, I only recently started advocating for myself at work about advancement opportunities. Because of this I wanted to ask this question to my male counterparts. When you have 1:1's with your direct reports and talk about career growth / aspirations what is your managers’ response typically? I’d like to gauge how my experience (negative) differs from others. For instance are you met with blockades, enthusiasm, dread, etc?

      Pros

Great 'feel' when in the office - very professional and positive. Everyone is respectful and honors expertise highly, regardless of personal differences.

      Cons

Leadership is passionate, but there has been much turnover of VPs and Directors in the last two years. This is to be expected in the Bay, though.

Clueless Folks and Horrible Engineering Leaders

Jan 21, 2021 - Dev Manager in Toronto, ON
      Recommend
      CEO Approval
      Business Outlook

      Pros

      - The compensation is slightly above the industry average

      Cons

I don't even know where to start... - Extremely toxic work environment that managers actually foster and grow - Almost the entirety of middle & high-level leaders belong to a museum rather than the Tech industry; they are still trying to enforce the software development approaches they learned in the 90s, and they are NOT willing to learn, listen, or even respect a different opinion. - VPs yelling at employees in meetings is a normal behavior in this workplace - Top priority is to make money at any cost; the customer can go to hell (as long as we've taken their money first) - The company cares about having a good "Global Citizen" image much more than actually being a good one. For example, we had to fight, tooth & nail, with the leadership team in internal channels to get them to release a statement supporting racial equity and hold them accountable for taking action later (that was during the racial inequity & BLM protests in 2020)... Needless to say that they did neither (allegedly because the customers they cater to in the US will not like that)

      Pros

      - Unlimited vacation - Good benefits

      Cons

      - Terrible management - Terrible planning in the overall company - Only agile/scrum by name, actually is waterfall - Too many middle layer product and program managers, uncoordinated teams, horrible communication who don't do anything - Lacking career advancement opportunities - Only one review per year, and no value of employees - You can be let go any time - Leadership doesn't respect or trust its employees - Leadership doesn't value its high performers, instead they value people who have been there for a decade playing the politics - Leadership isn't honest about their plans, they'll tell you one thing but do the opposite
