    I worked at Nordstrom part-time

    Pros

Ability to grow your own business and make your own pay cheque. All the managers really want you to excel and make as much money in your pocket as possible. I was able to work 3 days a week and still built my business to the size I wanted it.

    Cons

Not a lot of down time, customers can be demanding and don't respect person time off. However, if you're willing to answer texts from customers at 2am because they say some shoes online you can build a client base that will be repeat customers. Returns can be hard if you don't work at them and the off seasons can be really brutal if you only want to rely on foot traffic.

  3. "Company is pretty okay overall"

    StarStarStarStarStar
    Former Employee - Sales Associate

    I worked at Nordstrom full-time

    Pros

Managers really work with you to succeed. Certain departments have constant walk-ins/foot traffic so commission is steady.

    Cons

Lots of returns so often start shift with negative sales (very discouraging). Coworkers are fresh out of high school and extremely childish.

I worked at Nordstrom full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Thorough training in sales and customer engagement Training in Product Knowledge is helpful Majority of sales staff are friendly and easy to work with Benefits are good in the retail industry

    Cons

Sales Staff Turnover is very high: Their enthusiasm about making 'more money' is quite misleading. Commissioning out is constantly looming on the sales team from all departments. As a result people are left stressed and constantly hustling across the sales floor. More so their return policy is non existent. Customers can return absolutely ANYTHING at any point up to two years. Whether be damaged or soiled by the customers, that selling employee can be up to 10k worth of returns in the hole. If you are unable to recover from the negatives or having two pay periods of not commissioning, you would be written up. This leads to a few sharks that would steal from others creating another stress factor. As a result most employees do not last long. High Brow Club: There is very little opportunity of advancement. You can be all things but unless you brow nose the right people, along with being fake and a back stabber, there is no growth. If you drink their kool-aid and tow the line, you probably are a fanatic. And congratulations into entering the Mean Girls Club. Promises are only crumbs.

I worked at Nordstrom full-time for less than a year

    Pros

    - discount was okay

    Cons

    - assistant managers reminded me of a high school click. extremely unprofessional and bossy. try to hire people with actual leadership skills - some departments are better than others. avoid shoe department! It is insanely competitive and middle management will hire their friends and favour them over you. - assistant managers dictate the time you will spend on the floor (in women's shoes) if you aren't their friend from before, expect to spend a lot of time in the backroom and not on the floor making sales. - their training will make you believe they care about you, but when you bring your issues to HR they will do nothing about it - returns have an impact on your commission due to their ridiculous return policy. someone could return a pair of extremely worn boots and that'll be deducted from your pay

I have been working at Nordstrom part-time for more than a year

    Pros

Fairly independent work environment (usually common to walk around store and network with other staff/sell in other departments) friendly staff (for the most part) Flexible in terms of hours

    Cons

Depending on the department, hard to reach sales goals management pressures you to create/communicate with way more clients than reasonable. especially if you're only part time can be very boring, slow traffic a majority of the time, standing all day Lots of returns! it affects your daily sales/commission, therefore its not always easy to earn commission in your pay checks. low discount (20% off)

I worked at Nordstrom part-time for less than a year

    Pros

Good base pay in beauty + commissions Beautiful store/products Good events for shoppers

    Cons

During your training, you are told that after the customers, you as an employee come next. Which means your needs are to be met and management is there to support you. This is unbelievably far from the truth. Management constantly hassle employees for sales and if you fall short of your target, they start picking on you, as opposed to finding ways to support you. Unfair environment where there’s favouritism. At times your sale can be reversed without you knowing about it. They are also super strict about employee purchases and returns, not to mention a crappy discount. Expect to be a slave to your customer; Free makeup services, free hair styling, unlimited gifts and samples.
