Can help you on the phone

      Pros

No helping you on the phone

      Cons

I am sure RCMP are the best police force in the world. They are helpful attentive and responsive. No matter where you are calling from, their first line of help is to listen to you and try to help. But not the NYPD. You have to physically make it there. Even if someone is holding you hostage. Bad policing policy.

      Pros

Decent salary and Vacation time after 5 and half years . The dental and medical benefits

      Cons

Anything that makes sense and is logical will not happen int the department. Chaos, disfunction, irrelevance and non efficiency will all be a part of your workday. The PD needs and intervention. Too many old outdated supervisors…with poor decisions because they are BURNT OUT!! But the reason they are holding on is due to the power they hold while in rank ,paychecks , take home cars … Medical Benefits and Decent pension plans

It's not the job. It's the people.

      Pros

There's pride in joining the NYPD no matter what title you hold. If you don't know the city you will get quickly acquainted.

      Cons

Save some money up before you start cause between uniform and supplies your going to spend well over $1000.00 dollars. The disorganization is just astounding especially interdepartmentally. If you don't like all elements this isn't the job for you cause there is no such thing as comfort on the job. You are out there melting to the pavement with few places to get shade. You are out there in freezing weather often with no car to warm up in. The rain equipment is a joke $100.00+ for a rain coat that doesn't even remotely keep you dry. Union personnel work for the department too so how can they defend the next person with out fear of retaliation.

      Pros

The men and women I work with are sincerely the best some of the best I’ve had the pleasure of working with.

      Cons

Nepotism, overworked, low wage by comparison to other local agencies, low morale, hostile work environment (understandable), police should not be political tools, and down right hatred for a profession from a community that does nothing but what it’s asked of.

      Pros

Good benefits including health and retirement. Overtime. Pension.

      Cons

Low morale, crappy pay, forced overtime, too much micromanaging, too many disciplinary units looking to screw you over, severely understaffed, retirement is 25 yrs for full benefits, the city will screw you every chance it gets, and criminals have more freedom then the cops.

      Business Outlook

      Pros

      - You’re allowed to take more than one break per shift aside from lunch. - Bonus if you’re in radio, but it all depends on how much of your time is spent in radio, everyone fights to go in radio

      Cons

      - no work/life balance - lots of favoritism, if you don’t know anyone your request for PTO will probably get declined in favor of another - feels like slavery, with mandated overtime sometimes you’re working over 12-14 hours back to back. It gets depressing over time - they have a bunch of silly rules against phones, it’s like your back in high school, but if you look on FD/EMS side it’s very laid back
