    Pros

    Flexible schedules, work at home available, good benefits, great people.

    Cons

    With the gov't changes to the student loan industry it can be a bit unknown what's going to happen next or where things are going. There's been a lot of turnover lately since Nelnet bought GLHEC.

    Pros

    Weekends off and paid on time

    I don’t not know where to begin as there are so many cons. -Earned time off - only get 2 weeks off in one year. We were told at training that as long as we give couple weeks notice we would have our days off approved that is a LIE. Several employees including myself requested off a year in advance because some of us have families out of the country we would like to visit and the requests got denied. My request got approved but without eto I still got penalized in their stupid points system and it was never explained during training. I had to go see a doctor for an ongoing eye issue they told me with a doctors there would be no issues and days off would be approved. Another LIE. I still got penalized with points even with a doctors note. FYI 12 points and they fire you. I complained they said they would take the points off but they only took a couple off. If you have health issues and needing to see a doctor regularly please forget about working here they will make it hell for you to request off. Machines - they make you work like machines and micromanage breaks like it’s a nazi camp. You are one minute late from scheduled break you get penalized. They do not care if it’s snowing,blizzarding they expect you to show up to work even though when the State is shut down. They do not care about the safety of its employees on icy roads. They do not recognize accomplishments and good numbers they only look for even higher near imposible expectations meaning taking calls after calls non stop just like robots. We are humans they don’t acknowledge that -that is because they are in competition with other student loan services I.e Mohila and they forget about respect towards their employees. Management is horrible they tell you one thing then turn around and say the opposite they cannot be trusted. Systems - computers always break down , programs break down and they still expect you to take calls even without a working computer - borrowers get frustrated and yell at us for the systems being down yet we are told to stay on the line. The job itself is very depressing always borrowers yell, cry and even threaten to commit suicide - it is very rare that you get a happy call. It is advertised as a customer care position but it is actually a sales position they make you compete with other employees and with other student borrower companies. All they care is to bring as much money as possible and keep accounts current. I have so much more to say but I will end it here. I did learn a lot there and got good work experience. However if you want a job that will treat you as a human being ,respect you and not lie then I strongly recommend to looks elsewhere.

    Pros

    You'll get a paycheck and earn some time off.

    Cons

    Management is extremely abusive, vindictive, and cruel. Lip service is paid to caring about employees. They'll work you as much as possible then throw you away. No opportunity to advance if you are over the age of thirty. Management is tone deaf to experience outside of the company. If your loans are serviced by this company, consolidate and go to Navient or FedLoan Servicing. Nelnet poorly trains their staff and makes huge mistakes on accounts.

    Payroll will process and you get paid. ETO is average. They're always hiring. Food days are fun.

    Cons

    Are you seeking employment where you're treated as a valued employee and given opportunities to advance? Keep looking. Nelnet is not the job you want. Every day you work at Nelnet, your soul will die a little. Here's an overview of the experience awaiting you at Nelnet. Environment: If you enjoyed the traumas of junior high, you are in for a treat. Nelnet is a toxic workplace composed of leadership who isn't helping you succeed. You will be expected to work mandatory overtime because they failed to fully staff the division. When you're on mandatory overtime, leadership will deny any time off -- even for a doctor's appointment. They will also tell you exactly when you have to work the mandatory overtime. Would it be easier on your schedule to work five hours on Saturday because it fits your childcare needs? Sorry, you'll be stuck with an extra hour at the end of each shift Monday thru Friday and your kids will be home alone. Everyone is bitter and unhappy, and they take their frustrations out on other employees. Other employees will tear you down due to their inferiority complexes. Corporate culture: Have you ever put a cookie on your face and tried to scoot it down to your mouth while being filmed or been told to bok-bok like a chicken? This is the professional behavior you can expect in team meetings. As an adult, forcing employees to do this in a business meeting in front of peers is humiliating. Nelnet also thinks it's fun to make employees dress in pajamas or tie-dye for "employee appreciation week." This doesn't make you feel appreciated, but they'll give you junky swag like a clear plastic beach tote and towel so tiny it's unusable. Pay: Let's be up front here. The pay at Nelnet is dirt. If you're working data entry, the pay is $12 an hour. In the call center, it's slightly higher; however, customers scream at you . You will receive a tiny annual bump in salary. It doesn't significantly change your paycheck. If you question anything about the pay, you are told that "you're lucky to be employed." The benefits are minimal with insurance and HSA. They reimburse for a gym membership and tuition if your degree applies to their business (sorry, art history majors), but no one tells you how to do these things. Training: You'll be placed in a training program for several weeks. It will be incomplete, and you will flounder on the job. This will leave you wondering what you're doing wrong. It's not you, it's them. There are so many hidden pieces of knowledge about loans or the software, you'll never get a complete sense of how things work. Their written training resources are also incomplete. You'll be reliant on calling the Help Desk for assistance or asking your peers. At some point, you'll be treated like a moron for not knowing an answer that no one told you how to find. Advancement: Almost all of leadership is 30 and under. If you are over 30, you will not be promoted to supervisor, even if you have extensive, prior management experience. Leadership will flatter you and encourage applying for better positions, but you won't succeed. They are happy to keep you on the hamster wheel, working like crazy and getting nowhere. Performance-based organization: Nelnet uses this approach to employee performance. This means you have a monthly score card with different metrics to judge your work. Your score card impacts your job retention and annual bonus. On the score card, you're graded 1 through 5. If your score is less than a 3, you're in trouble. Receiving a 5 is next to impossible. If you question leadership about the idiocy of this system, they will tell you, "By Nelnet standards, a 3 is an A." No. In any other world, a 5 is an A and a 3 is a C. If you start to succeed and get scores like a 4.70 (B+), leadership will suddenly change all of the metrics to purposefully bring your score down. This performance-based system means you work like crazy, but cannot ever succeed because a top score is unattainable and the way they grade you is changed at will. Leadership: There are several concerns with their leadership. First, if you're smart, leadership fears you and doesn't know how to manage you. Second, supervisors are away from their employees for most of the day at meetings, doing important things like going outside to smoke together, or leaving early to "work from home." This leaves the hapless Team Leads in charge. Third, leadership has little experience actually leading. They are cliquish and only talk to the employees they favor. Days went by without my supervisor saying hello or acknowledging my existence. The supervisor always had plenty of time to discuss trashy pop culture with favorite employees. Fourth, chances are strong your supervisor never did your job so they can't help you. If you have specific questions about how to do the work, they cannot answer them because they came from a different department. Fifth, leadership is very adept at lying. They lie about some of the littlest things. They lie about appreciating employees. They lie about solving problems. They even lied about a vote for a department outing, so they could do the event they wanted. Sixth, if you speak up about problems, they do not want to hear it. Leadership cannot handle any unhappiness or frustrations in the workplace. If you need to complain, bottle it up and save it until you get home. Seventh, leadership will gaslight you. So you have a meeting where you get chewed out for 30 minutes and it makes you unhappy, they will openly lie and tell you that's not how things happened. Except it did. Job requirements: If you're in the call center, everything is timed or measured. Late coming back from a break because you had stomach cramps, that's a demerit. Call in sick with bronchitis and you have a doctor's note explaining your absence, that's a demerit. Take too long to wrap up your calls and make notes on the account, that's a demerit. Too many demerits and you're fired. You get two timed 15 minutes breaks, plus lunch. If you need to pee more frequently or stretch your legs, you're out of luck. If Nelnet requires overtime, your lunch will be cut from 60 to 30 minutes. Daily work life: Is there an inch of ice on the streets and kids are out of school? Sorry, Nelnet won't close for a snow day. You're stuck risking your life and vehicle to get to work, even though the whole city is shut down. If you're late or can't get there, it's a demerit. Facilities are poorly managed with parking lots not sanded for ice. Bathrooms are built too small for a wheelchair. Portions of the buildings are inaccessible to the disabled. Promises will be made to fix things, but it won't happen. Systems: Nelnet is a multi-billion dollar company, and their systems are junk. Your computer will crash on an almost a daily basis. It will crash while on a phone call with a customer. Systems go down company-wide for hours, and all work is paralyzed. You'll spend a lot of time on the phone with IT and won't get credit for your time. Your time use/productivity hurts your score card. Sick people come to work and share their illness. You will be sick all the time because other employees don't want demerits for staying home. Job skills: You'll learn some, but not enough, about student loans. This doesn't translate to other job opportunities. You won't learn new software that helps in other work places, or pick up any transferable skills. Time-off: Your earned time off is mixed with your sick leave. This means you have to save back some hours for when you're actually sick. If you don't know to do this, you're out of luck. You also won't get time off around the holidays unless you have a high score card and seniority. Customers: The customers will be unhappy about their loans and take it out on phone reps. Because loans are regulated by federal law, you don't have a lot of options to offer, and their problems cannot be solved. All company survey: Until two years ago, they had an all company survey so you could voice concerns and address areas of improvement. Management didn't like the answers received, so the all company survey mysteriously disappeared. Human resources: Don't bother escalating a complaint to them. You'll be stuck in mediation and nothing will be resolved. During mediation, you'll be asked to apologize -- even if you're the victim. Conclusion: Take a hard pass on working for Nelnet. A job here will not improve your life or job skills. At the end of the day, you'll be miserable and depressed just like every other Nelnet employee.

    Great benefits, lots of PTO, great pay

    Cons

    Not mental-health friendly... if you’re a student loan advisor, you deal with a lot of heavy stuff everyday—people have lost their jobs, had a death in the family, financial hardships, homelessness, medical problems, etc. If you’re a sensitive person, I wouldn’t recommend working here. And they will require mandatory overtime and 30 minute lunches somedays as well.

    Work life balance can be a plus or a minus, too much here impedes collaboration, although nice for individuals, not so much for teams.

    New government administration is retooling student loans, outlook not good Nobody is held accountable, fear of real management for legacy employees Upper management is a small clique with 5th grade mentality and embarrassing behaviors that are unwilling to change Lost several good people, including recently one of the best IT managers who was invoking change

    Pros

    Nelnet is a great place to work. Co-workers, team leads, and supervisors are what makes the culture enjoyable. This is a stress full job only because you are assisting borrowers with their financial burden from student loans. It can also be rewarding when you are able to find a solution to their financial problems. If you request time off with anticipation, your able to receive the day you need. At times their is mandatory overtime, but you are paid time and a half. Benefits are good.

    Stressful assisting borrowers who are unable to pay their loans.

    Pros

    The hiring process was fast, the four week training was excellent due to the two trainers and the floor time to take calls during training was right on the mark. After training was completed we were directed to our specific teams & supervisors. The supervision & leads were very well trained to handle the new hires questions. The QA team does side by side consultations (which is great) and they go over your evaluations for improvements but also, they give you 30 days to bring your scores up. Everything to this position had lead to individual and educational growth into the company. This call center gives you a variety of calls - so there was much to learn.

    Cons

    There are some "cons" to the position but what call center doesn't have them. The majority of the calls received were dedicated to helping individuals with loan repayment plans so the Best advice is to study your material in class and do some additional searching on studentloans.gov when given the chance, as there is "a...lot" to learn. But also, when in training, ask questions on what you don't understand in class before you go out on the production floor. There are leads and supervisors who will assist but at least make the additional effort to be prepared. The calls are back to back but after awhile when you start to get use to the flow of the calls it won't seem as difficult. The range of calls can be different - not all calls will be as the last one - some can be more difficult than others. Also, so that others know, the help desk is exceptional for assisting new hires with calls that have tough questions or for giving phone advice for a student borrower.

    It is horrible. Your eto accrues pretty fast though. Also some of the coworkers make showing up to work somewhat bearable.

    Cons

    The "leadership" at Nelnet is a joke. The ability to get promoted has no correlation to management skills. The quality assurance department is inept. I feel bad for all the people stuck with third rate servicing of their student loans. Nelnet is ran by selfish people who have no grasp of reality and avoid this place like the plague.
