I worked at Metroland Media Group full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Coworkers in digital/e-commerce were a more fun, engaging group than in other Metroland markets; decent benefits plan.

    Cons

Poor compensation (i.e. far below market values across departments), demoralizing atmosphere/corporate culture, no paths for career growth, constant layoffs and requests for voluntary dismissal, extreme pressure from management to work overtime for no compensation, gender biases (few females seemed to ascend to higher-level roles, and boys club-culture tended to dominate in several departments).

I worked at Metroland Media Group full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

I was fortunate to work on a good team and decent benefits

    Cons

Much of the upper management is misguided with there approach and treatment of employees, morale is critically low, the “new era” that is being ushered in is just same ish with new paint, the race to the bottom needed to “right the ship” is too little to late, under qualified individuals run departments because recruitment is hard due to poor pay/poor prospects of getting better/other items, and lack of communication throughout the organization.

    Advice to Management

Become more diversified with decision maker, listen to your employees, and reduce the politics / grandstanding

I worked at Metroland Media Group full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Not many these days due to industry being akin to a melting iceberg. A far cry from the good old days.

    Cons

Too many chiefs and not enough Indians. Moral is terrible due to continuous staff reductions and uncertainty of the business. Especially on the print media side.

    Advice to Management

Need to treat employees with respect. Also get rid of the old dinosaurs in the company. Especially those in editorial management.
