Inexperienced manager / Dead-end contract positions

      Pros

Most of the people in my direct team are great humans to work with. The work is challenging and interesting since so much of the user experience design practice at Meijer is brand new. The org is really trying to advance and create meaningful digital experiences for their customers. This position has been good for a short-term contract roll.

      Cons

UX manager is inexperienced and isn’t enabled to make hard decisions for the team. She isn’t knowledgeable in upwardly communicating the value of design to our business/C-suite folks which leads to strange requests from leadership that are not in line with design best practices. Org as a whole doesn’t understand the value of design (and this shows in Meijer’s digital experiences). Other teams like CX (customer experience) horde access to information and testing tools— my only guess as to why this happens is because our team has similar competencies and this is somehow threatening to them (this feels telling for how the rest of the corporate environment at Meijer functions). The UX team has added over 20 ppl in the last 6 months — all but two have been contract rolls with no intent to hire. Manager opens one FTE seat every six months and it creates a weird tension on the team. There’s not an obvious push to open more FTE rolls but there’s lip service to “budgets” when questions come up regarding FTE rolls and career development. Dev team members are usually hired within months because “that’s what leadership has put value in.” I get the sense that the UX manager has no priority or competency to work with leadership to open more FTE seats and isn’t in any hurry to do so. In the past she’s filled FTE seats with outside hires that have no more experience or ability than what’s already available in-house. Obvious favoritism creates weird toxic team environment. All of this gets in the way of doing meaningful design work. There’s not a huge feeling a trust within the team. Dev teams get a lot of visibility and leadership praise — the UX leadership should be more vocal in communicating the value our designers are providing the larger organization— and our dev teams.

      Pros

The company as a whole really does seam to care, lots of great benefits, and pay is competitive.

      Cons

Almost everything is left up to the Store Director interpretation, in the 7 years I worked with 5 different Store Directors in 2 different stores, they truly can change the environment. The worst were the ones that came from Walmart. They don’t treat team members with respect and expect their leaders to be jerks as well.
