It's about time they raised their stipends.
Mar. 3, 2023 - Graduate Research Assistant in Montreal, QCRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
If you find a good supervisor, if you have good financial support from your family and if you have unwavering optimism in succeeding in a sisyphean task, you will find a lot of enjoyment doing research at McGill. You will have access to almost world class laboratories, almost cutting edge equipment and technologies, and almost state-of-the-art facilities. Most importantly, you will work and struggle together with graduate students from diverse backgrounds and experience levels. It will be a learning experience that will hopefully not saddle you with debt and provide you with a pathway to gainful employment.
Cons
You will question your own self worth and spend many sleepless nights pondering why you didn't just go and get a Real Job™️. Finding like minded peers outside of your department will be a struggle given the perpetual disarray and dysfunction of most graduate student associations. That is assuming that you are not already swamped with the unforgiving research work and the non-stop whining of undergraduate students who you are babysitting on behalf of an overworked research supervisor. Also do not forget about the overbearing administrative overhead that cocoons everyone in red tape. If only they put more effort on raising the stipend amount, which has not changed in 20 years and counting.

Mar. 10, 2023 - PhD Student in Montreal, QCRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Lots of interesting science going on here so it's great academic-wise
Cons
Student stipend is below poverty line and TA rate is also behind other big universities. Even with a scholarship, there's no guarantee you would get more money than the baseline stipend since it's basically deducted from the stipend.
