I worked at Marks & Spencer part-time for less than a year

    Pros

Felt part of team, was great to be paid the same as people a lot older than me.

    Cons

Sometimes in busy periods management wouldn't take control as much as they needed to, eg christmas was a bit of a mess, no one knew where they needed to be

I have been working at Marks & Spencer part-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

There is always opportunities to work your way up in the company. The pay is decent, even more so if you live in one of the top spots so you get a little extra an hour. Benefits are worth it - great staff discount and perks outside of M&S

    Cons

The managers expect so much from you, even as a sales assistant. Long hours with little breaks.

I worked at Marks & Spencer part-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

The hours suited me at the time and the general workers are friendly.

    Cons

Management was poor at this store especially middle managers. Back stabbing and causing tension between staff. A lot of managers felt they were too important to speak to sales assistants (and customers) M&S has a good reputation as a great place to work, that must have been 20 years ago because I would not recommend at all - I can only speak for the Sprucefield store in Lisburn.

    Advice to Management

Treat all staff as they are your equal, be nice and people will be motivated to go the extra mile and for god sake get rid of the (unofficial) managers table in the canteen, it’s not 1965!
