I worked at Marathon Oil full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Find the right track and you will move up until you hit your ceiling (not everyone is cut out to be CEO or a top manager, although 90% think they are). No one is going to gift you a promotion or advance your career without merit. Pay is very good, if you prove yourself you will be rewarded with tremendous responsibility. Many won't put in the extra effort to make the top grade... and watch them whine. Fortunately we don't hold on to the whiners very long.

    Cons

Limited opportunities once you hit the high end manager positions, but the pay is still great and challenges still there. Although they claim to be a "family oriented" company, forget trying to get your kids in the door because you work there- they will have to do it on their own.

    Advice to Management

My advice is worthless without my name to align with my performance. Why should they listen to an unknown who might have a biased grip? The CEO leads the team with his vision, his managers better be good or they won't last long. If you can't put your trust in the team you better find another job- but it won't be any better there. Keep jumping ship and you will never get to the top. Put your nose to the grindstone and prove yourself.

I worked at Marathon Oil full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Pay is good and benefits still in-line with peers.

    Cons

Diversity in the company is completely gone. Safety has gone from the best in the businesses to the worst over the last 5 years.

    Advice to Management

The company has way too many supervisors and middle managers and not enough workers. Some managers have one or two employees reporting to them. Company still struggles to make money with 60 to 70 dollar oil. Competitors don't seem to be having this issue.

I worked at Marathon Oil full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    Good pay, not much else

    Cons

If you do a great job but you don't talk a bunch of bs then you're a goner, sorry. If management doesn't know who you are because you're too busy doing your job, you're gone. If you are not a socialite but you love doing your job and work hard at it, you're fired.

    Advice to Management

Let Managers do their jobs. Stop firing employees based on your own baseless information and get the feedback from your managers before over reacting. An employee who works 9 hours a day should not get praised while another employee who did the same exact job as the 9 hour employee did in just 1 hour gets lectured because he has a little extra free time. Some employees actually know how to do their jobs very efficiently in a fraction of time it takes a regular employee, recognize that! Fire those employees who continue to take every single Friday off as a Flex Friday without getting caught!
