I have been working at Manitoba Hydro-Electric full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Amazing salary, benefits, and pension. 9-day work cycle makes every weekend a little better. Lots of room for growth, training and new opportunities.

    Cons

Complacency; they talk about encouraging "thinking outside of the box" or "taking initiative" but there is a lot of pushback when employees actually try. The big cuts from PC Government is also negatively affecting young employees - being denied training and further education.

    Advice to Management

When someone is enthusiastic about new ideas, collaborating, and doing everything necessary to find the role suited to them, pay attention. You don't get people like that every day.

I have been working at Manitoba Hydro-Electric full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    hydro Mondays
    decent wages
    interesting projects
    mostly hard working people

    Cons

    too engineering centric
lack of advancement for non engineers
stagnant - ie no real innovation or backing for innovation or thinking outside the box
too many silos and empire building
    nepotisim
    back room deals

    Advice to Management

there needs to be a significant cultural change in order to get the changes senior management envisions. unfortunately the senior management group are the good old boys and there is a lack of a clearly defined vision for the company going forward. the big builds while required should have been handled very differently and with much more transparency with how contracting is awarded.

I have been working at Manitoba Hydro-Electric full-time

    Pros

Great benefits, pension, etc. Excellent work life balance and fair pay. Excellent job diversity within the corporation.

    Cons

Current turmoil over mandated staffing reductions, but once completed should be business as usual.

I have been working at Manitoba Hydro-Electric full-time

    Pros

Many places and people to work with. The same skills can be used in different business areas including generation, transmission and distribution. Possible to avoid job bottom by moving around. Great benefit package with some portions paid for.

    Cons

It is a big company. Might be disturbing for someone who thinks that small start ups are as big as they would like to work in. Creativity is highly valued but control of new ideas goes through a vetting process. Work flow can be tedious to those who love lots of personal freedom. Work is serous. Government control seems arbitrary at times.

    Advice to Management

It is important to have a continuous areas of new employees who can keep things fresh. Adopt new technologies to attract new talent and keep existing staff

    I worked at Manitoba Hydro-Electric full-time

    Pros

    - Good engineering experience
    - Good pay
    - Flexible work hours
    - Knowledgable co-workers
    - Offered re-hire each summer while an undergraduate student

    Cons

    - Stuff can move a bit slow since it's a big government owned company
    - A fair amount of people that aren't that passionate about their jobs, however, this is offset by the many people that are very passionate

    Advice to Management

    - The management was really good for what I dealt with. Maybe re-evaluating certain positions in the company that aren't necessary to cut out some redundancy

I worked at Manitoba Hydro-Electric (More than a year)

    Pros

Hydro mondays are the best. Co-workers in my group are one of the hard-working ones in the company.

    Cons

Work style varies from group to group - due to the company being so large, maintaining a consistency can be difficult. One group can be performing very efficiently while some are not.

    Pros

    - Great base salary
    - Great benefits
    - Lots of room to move around in the company if you meet qualifications

    Cons

    - Company is going to a period of downsizing leading to lots of uncertainty for employees in the 1-10 years of service range.
    - At times there is to many layers of management
    - At times there is micromanaging
    - At times there is a lot of red tape to go through to get things done
    - Hard company to get into without being a summer student first
    - College diplomas are sometimes not viewed as seriously as they should be

    Pros

As a summer student you have the opertunity to move around within hydro every summer, gaining experience in many areas of the company. Great people to work with.

    Cons

You are not given any options to move into full time after graduation. Some days can be slow and you have to find things to stay busy. Different departments have different workloads.

    Advice to Management

I think it would be great if you gave those who worked as a summer student some credit when applying for full time after graduation.

    Pros

    - Very friendly and professional fellow colleagues. I found the work culture to be very positive.
    - Convenient and nice location downtown.
    - Good salary.
    - Great work/life balance.

    Cons

I find there is less priority on innovation and development of ground-breaking technologies, with most jobs at Hydro having a stronger focus on day-to-day operations. This is likely fine with most people, but I wouldn't recommend it to those that possess a strong "start-up spirit" or an intense interest in creative design. That being said there is still a lot you can learn from how a Corporation operates as well as working with different types of people.

    Advice to Management

Continue doing a great job. Personally I had a great experience while working at Hydro.

    I worked at Manitoba Hydro-Electric full-time

    Pros

Developed several mentorship relations that accelerated learning and imersion into field of work. Exposed to various departments with wide range of assignments.

    Cons

Extremely long hours, can be adverse weather conditions during winter months outdoors, lots of travel involved.

    Advice to Management

Continue building relationships with students willing to learn as this encourages more input and ability to understand the larger processes at a whole.
