I have been working at MAC Cosmetics full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

MAC is a very creative and innovative company that proves to be the makeup authority. MAC offers great training to staff for makeup artistry and customer service. Your team can start feeling like family or friends after a matter of time because a lot of teamwork is needed to run the store/counter. Good managers will always have your back about anything you need (schedule conflicts, personal matters, customer complaints..etc) because they don't scold you, they want to help you work better and feel better. Very generous employee discount with gratis from collections throughout the year. Upper management and HR also give support to staff better than most companies. The best makeup career you can have in retail because it goes beyond that by not limiting artists to instore activities only. You can be certified in levels of service until a certain advanced one where you can be invited to high profile events (fashion week, local award shows, glamorous parties, makeup conventions..) to perform demos or groom celebrities. If you make a good experience at MAC, most people stay for life. It is still retail but you have the power to create a rewarding journey as an artist.

    Cons

Work and life balance are what most people are turned off about because this is still a retail job. You are expected to work weekends and holidays. No negotiation there. If you have a fair manager, they will give you time for your personal matter. It just has to be asked in advanced. If there is 1 negative person on the team, it brings every one down. 1 more week of vacation every 5 years (2 weeks when you begin..3weeks after 5 and so on..) this can be annoying because some times people need to go abroad to see family. You can go away for too long and it's hard to get your vacation weeks consecutively. Right now, it's hard for people to move up the ladder because not everyone is hiring for positions/hours that you want. You have to wait until that perfect position opens up but you still have to interview and wow the manager. Can be stressful if you don't manage your time well. You are expected to be reliable and contribute to the team. But if you are going through personal things you can't let it show.

I have been working at MAC Cosmetics

    Pros

They extend an employee discount to permanent staff as well as new collection products (4 max). Also as a permanent employee, you are given makeup supply every six months.

    Cons

Schedule does not encourage a healthy work/life balance. No benefits for part-time employees. There is a lack of proper communication between store management and retail/sales employees. Management has a "do as I say not as I do" attitude. They have difficulty leading by example.

    - Customers completely trust your advice and see you as a top-of-the-line makeup artist. - Excellent wage - Free makeup with every collection (gratis) + employee discount - Small stores, very friendly atmosphere. You literally get to become friends with the other employees. - Exciting events (Level-A) are often organized + collections coming out all the time - Busy days, shifts go by extremely fast - You sometimes get to meet well-known people and do their makeup for special events (local celebrities, national athletes, etc) - Very rewarding job! - Most MAC girls get recognized on the street by some customers, who stop them to thank them for doing their makeup on special events such as their wedding or prom.

    Cons

    - Very difficult to get more hours on your contract. You usually start with 10-15 hours a week and need to wait til a new position opens with new hours to apply for it. - Very difficult to become a permanent employee. - Management can sometimes lack in leadership.

    Pros

Good benefits / generous employee discount / gratis

    Cons

Sometimes you will be the only one working a 6-8 hour shift buy yourself before another staff member gets in. Also hard to maintain home/work life balance.

I have been working at MAC Cosmetics part-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Great employee discount, product and skill training at MAC stores, passionate and creative team of artists. Higher starting rate than a lot of other counters/brands.

    Cons

Very intense sales goal structure. Can be clique-y depending on what counter/store you are at. Difficult to obtain full-time status/more hours.
