I have been working at Los Angeles USD full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Sometimes you get through to some students and that makes all the difference in the whole world. A school counselor gets two months off during the summer and spring break and winter break. This is great if you have a family or your own.

    Cons

I work at a small school and I feel like there is so much paperwork and events I am required to do that it takes away from actually counseling the students. Parent involvement is also horrible and parents expect you to raise their children. They blame the teachers and staff members for what they are not doing at home.

I have been working at Los Angeles USD full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

It's fun to work with kids. You get three months vacation yearly. When kids and/or parents thank you for your work. It's rewarding.

    Cons

As a school counselor you will do the job of three people. Your caseload is not humanly manageable.

I have been working at Los Angeles USD

    Pros

The amount of vacation and sick time is extraordinary.

    Cons

There is a lack of vision in what a school counselor can accomplish. Currently, emphasis is placed on scheduling children, supervision on campus, and crisis management rather than on programs to prevent problems or enhance mental health, career exploration, and college awareness. Also, compared to other school districts in Los Angeles area, our salaries are on the low side.
