      The Greatest Company

      Pros

Great example of a family business that evolves and gets better. Pension plan, Benefits and other incentives not found in the modern workplace.

      Cons

I really can't think of any. Issues that arise are discussed and dealt with promptly. This is the advantage of having a successful open door policy with upper management and their good relationship with the employees.

      Great Staff, Poor Management

      Pros

Incredible staff to work alongside. Real sense of camaraderie. Lots of opportunities to find work outside of store hours through building music community connections.

      Cons

Upper management somewhat out of touch. Outdated web presence. Company policies reinforce some bad customer behaviour.

Poor pay for Lesson Centre Coordinators

      Oct 17, 2016 -

      Pros

Wonderful National supervisor for the lesson centres who is very passionate about the success of the lesson centres & is very knowledgeable. He is very approachable and gives solid advice. He was the best person in the company to work with as he is very supportive of the coordinators. Unfortunately the rest of the upper management in the company do not value the work done in the lesson centres which causes great frustration for coordinators. They do not listen to coordinators' concerns regardless of the validity or volume of coordinators who express the same concerns nationally.

      Cons

Even though you are managing the lesson centres, you really have very little say or input as the store manager has all the say. Even upper management is very resistant to taking the Lesson Centres seriously and expanding to meet growth demands. No matter how busy the lesson centre is, you are also expected to do a great amount of work in the store while store staff shirk on their duties. Very little opportunity to advance, expecially as a female. Pay is poor and does not increase with or reflect exponential growth or success. Although you are a supervisor, those you supervise make over double per hour you will make. Pay is not reflective of your education or training or the amount of responsibility you have. Teachers who you supervise, even with less education and less experience as teachers, earn over double per hour than you will ever make with this company. Store staff treat you with little respect, treating you as a "mere secretary" despite the intense responsibility you have, especially if you are female. This attitude is reflected by store management. There is a lot of turnover in the lesson centres due to poor pay, lack of listening to the concerns of coordinators and lack of respect in general towards the coordinators by the rest of the company. Due to the afternoon and evening hours, this position does not work well for employees with children as you are expected to work every evening and weekends. No empathy or allowance is given if your child is sick acutely or chronically, even if hospitalized locally or away. You are still expected to show up to work. Hours are long, mostly afternoons, evenings and weekends. Depending on availability of someone to cover for you, you often don't get legally mandated breaks so can go 9h without a bathroom break or to eat meals (you are not allowed to eat at your desk either!). Time off for vacations is very limited and very restricted. Overtime pay is not allowed, although overtime hours are expected. They do not pay past closing time, although lessons stop at the same time they stop paying you, so be ready to work a minimum of 15 minutes per day for no pay as you have to wait for students and teachers to leave so you can lock up. It is hard to keep part-time staff due to the limited hours of work you can offer them. P/T staff tend to have more say than coordinators as the basically dictate their own hours, even though you are their supervisor. This makes it very difficult to take vacations or days off in an already very restrictive schedule, especially if coordinating vacations with your spouse's work and children's time off. You are expected to cover for them if they call in sick or want vacation time, or quit, even working weeks without any days off and working up to 12h a day with no compensation financially. You can bank the extra hours to take off, but you can only do it IF the p/t staff agrees to cover it. Even on your days off or sick days you have to be accessible for the store staff to contact you 24/7 if even minor issues come up. This includes being away on vacation as they will phone or email you and continue to do so until you respond, often getting angry if you don't answer or respond. Be prepared to have to contact everyone if the store closes for weather on your day off because the store staff will not look after it. You will have parallel supervisors which causes a lot of confusion as you answer to the store management chain and the lesson centre management chain who do not agree with each other. You can have 4 supervisors at equal levels, so it is impossible to keep everyone happy and consistent. This creates a very stressful workplace as those whose opinion you don't follow hold it against you. A great amount of emphasis is placed on growth and student retention. However if you approach the teachers affecting these aspects and they are displeased with you asking them to improve, management holds it against you instead of standing up for you: even though the pressure initially comes from management. There is very little support from management for you if teachers are upset.

      Fantastic Company to work for

      Jul 15, 2015 - Shipper/Receiver in Edmonton, AB

      Pros

The atmostphere that is created through the gathering of people that simply love music is amazing. The stores carry beautiful instruments and the employees are encouraged to play them. The discounts and perks are amazing if you are a musician.

      Cons

The upper management (execs) tour the stores but do not spend very much time getting to know the lower level employees. They are very very nice people but are just sort of in and out.
