Founder Jack Long is both very nice, and VERY intelligent! His family continues the tradition!

      Pros

Founder Jack Long is both very nice, and VERY intelligent. His knack for setting up practical, customer-focused business systems has resulted in exponential growth. Almost everyone working there is either a musician or technician or teacher, so they all understand the needs of the clientele. Non-commission sales foster a teamwork that results in greater customer satisfaction.

      Cons

Pay-rates are not very high, but job-satisfaction and an overall pleasant atmosphere make up for it. There aren't too many real cons.

      Pros

Working with a community of musicians, instruments and gear.

      Cons

Constant turn over. Raises to the expect are only cost of living even if you make them a million dollars a year. You also get a total of six paid sick days a year ever if it’s your job that has overworked you to the point of illness. Come to think of it our General manager got cancer before he passed away. He took two years of sick leave and when he came back they wanted to demote him to salesperson after 35 years of service.

      Long & McQuade Response

      President

This is an interesting review. The comments regarding the previous manager are pretty much fiction and have no basis in reality. On top of sick days, we have both Short Term and Long Term Disability. I am always willing to discuss specific issues with any employee that feels that they would like to contact me, this forum is probably not the best place to try and resolve issues.

      Pros

CALGARY EAST LOCATION - Employee benefits - Great environment for musicians - Employee discount - Friendly co-workers

      Cons

      - Double standards for the amount of work expected to be done between the sales and rentals departments - Management uses intimidation and negative reinforcement tactics, have unrealistic expectations, make matters personal, and are hyper critical of mistakes - Very high turnover rate - The amount of work can be overwhelming, don't expect to get additional help - Unhappy people shop here - Major language barriers - Pay isn't that great Life is too short to work here. Apply at a different Long and McQuade.

      President

I am sorry that your experience in this location wasn't pleasant. I understand it can be frustrating in the rental departments, as they can get very busy at certain times.

Terrible Management, Otherwise not that bad

      Pros

      - Decent starting pay - Perfect place for a musician/music gear enthusiast - Decent work life balance (always have Sundays off)

      Cons

Management needs a lot of work - Mistreatment of multiple employees, including myself - Favouritism on multiple occasions ie. Declining time off with over a months notice because staffing is necessary only to give time off to another employee on a days notice that they are personal friends with outside of work - Scare tactics - discipling for things that are not an employees fault, upon finding it was not said employees fault still continue to mistreat employee/no apology

      Long & McQuade Response

      President

I am sorry that your experience was less than pleasant. We have had some challenges in that location caused by some health issues in Management. We are hoping to turn things around. As CEO I am quite reachable, and always willing to discuss specific problems with our employees.

      Pros

Extremely empathetic and sympathetic to the working lives of musician (leaving early or taking time off); Most individual managers of departments respect the integrity and decisions of their employees.

      Cons

Sometimes seemed like there was a gap between the managing of each department and the overhead management of the company, which can make it hard to have situations change.

      Fantastic Company to work for

      Pros

The atmostphere that is created through the gathering of people that simply love music is amazing. The stores carry beautiful instruments and the employees are encouraged to play them. The discounts and perks are amazing if you are a musician.

      Cons

The upper management (execs) tour the stores but do not spend very much time getting to know the lower level employees. They are very very nice people but are just sort of in and out.
