    Cons

Really LV employees get over yourselves! Milwaukee NM is tired of hearing your woes. You were bought for a reason and that is your new mission. Come work in Milwaukee to help transform NM & Milwaukee into a technology hub or go work somewhere else. NM is far from perfect. But, it is what it is and LV employees need to stop complaining, join your new culture or get the heck out. And, stop bragging about your expense accounts, fancy hotels, restaurants out, etc. on NM's dime including all the free airline miles so your families can go on free vacations. You have no clue about what Milwaukee home office employees have been dealing with in regards to 'strategic expense' management

    Advice to Management

Changing benefits for 2018 to stop LV employees from crying was a stupid move. You kept alienating NM home office employees showing a preference to keep NY employees. No wonder morale is low. 'Strategic Expense Management' - how about stopping the wasted LV NY employee expense account waste!!

I have been working at LearnVest full-time

    Pros

The mission and work is noble, exciting, and motivating, especially if you believe in financial planning. The "front line" employees in Arizona work hard and are great teammates and colleagues. It's exciting to be tasked with transforming the way a massive company, NWM, approaches planning and engages with clients.

    Cons

Lots of us came to LearnVest because of the value they placed on CFPs and financial planning. Well that seems to have gone by the wayside because the most recent few promotions have totally disregarded that value. We recently had an open position in AZ for an Assistant Director role. Lots of people were interested because being a small office, new opportunities don't come up often. Lots of planners were interested in applying but were told that the Sr Director said "it's really hard to "skip a level" in an organization." Basically, if you're not already in management, it'd be really hard to get this new role. So a lot ofpeople didn't apply - we figured a manager would get promoted which honestly made the most sense. They are all CFPs, they know the work, the people, and have put their time into the company. Well that's not what happened. The person who got the role went from managing no people to managing 30 people. Not only that, but he has no planning experience, no experience with the software, and no ties to the specific work that he will now be leading. I guess that when the entire operations team is considered "leadership" they automatically qualify for things like this??? This is in no way an insult to the guy who got the job but it's a huge insult to literally every other employee in the office who would actually be qualified to do the job. The future of AZ is a bit bleak because we are loosing our connection to planning and CFP values.

    Advice to Management

Stop thinking that "operations" is the most important thing in a company. Don't alienate your team by playing favorites.

    Pros

The free snacks, food and celebrating are endless.

    Cons

Due to the acquisition by Northwestern Mutual, the remaining LearnVest employees live in paranoia that their jobs are going away so the culture has turned to fear and a need to justify their work. If you are looking for career growth or tenure, look elsewhere.

    Advice to Management

Someone please make the decision to pull the plug on what is left of LearnVest.

I have been working at LearnVest full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Learnvest existed at one time and was, at one point, an enjoyable place to work. It is now NorthwesternMutual. However, there is still some little bit left of a startup feeling as opposed to the boring monotony of NorthwesternMutual - although every day it becomes more a life insurance company. All the positives that were sold to Learnvest hires no longer exist. So know you're signing up for NorthwesternMutual.

    Cons

NorthwesternMutual's business of offering financial planning is 100% a cover for them pitching life insurance - their main business. This has been commented on in the personal finance subreddit as well as other media outlets. Its somewhat disingenuous.

Learnvest no longer exists. The technology that was Agile, and fluid is now... well the technology is antiquated at best. From the 60s and hacked to work with Kubernetes and Docker is more in line with reality. Stability is not a known thing at NM. Expect your network connection to have no internet multiple times a week.

Expect to be locked out of your system multiple times a month.
Expect having to call Milwaukee from your personal device to get any of the above rectified.
Expect having NO access to personal email.
Expect nearly any website not relating to NM's business to be blocked.
Expect a very conservative workforce that you'll be reporting too in Milwaukee.
Expect terrible health benefits - the current benefits were rolled out as an utter disaster and the former CEO of Learnvest had to fight, literally, for benefits that weren't a step back a decade.

Learnvest was acquired so that NM can have a presence (marketing perhaps) in New York. Their business model has no concept of what a vibrant cultural environment - like Manhattan - is like and pushes very hard against it. The company as a whole is very conservative, for lack of a better word, and you should be aware of that going in.

    Advice to Management

    cut the fat.

You have people in roles that are far beyond their capabilities - forcing terrible decisions on your workforce. Embrace Agile methodologies - not just the ones that you feel you can work with. The New York office leadership, baring one or two, need to go. they're terrible.

the more you take from your employees - the less happy they will be working for you.

    Pros

Bahahahahaha! Well, after three years of a slow death, it's finally come to an end. So embarrassing.

    Cons

The leaders at LV should be ashamed for living the lie and promoting the propaganda of a slimy insurance scheme belonging to Northwestern Mutual strategy. More critically, they should feel ashamed for conning good people to come to LV, who believe in the mission and values. I feel bad for those that will still get sucked in.

    Advice to Management

Be transparent and say its Northwestern Mutual you're really working on.

I have been working at LearnVest full-time

    Pros

    I joined 1.5 years ago

    1) Rare chance to change big company through a much smaller acquired startup. Personally I have a bigger role than I could possibly have at a company nearly the size. And i think that naysayers (including a few on glassdoor) need a REALITY CHECK. Go apply for a job at another financial institution of NWMs size and you will be a rank and file employee for a decade before having an impact. If you are NYC office / LearnVest, you are literally one of the key change agents of the entire company. Invaluable experience. May mean great long term role here. For me will probably leverage into something else at some point. But has been very career advancing for me.

    2) technology and product having confusing reporting. and tension between the two. But are doing game-changing work. Transferable to startup world or to taking a bigger seat at a mature company.

    3) Good, smart people.

    4) Sort of like living through a case study on big company "transformation". A lot of that inevitable if not already underway.

    5) Taverna's french fries. I love greek food. the restauraunt below the office has fine greek food but french fries for the Gods.

    Cons

    1) need more direction / leadership in NYC. Is it Alexa von Tobel (i think in title she is Head) or someone from Milwaukee? I guess Milwaukee doesn't like when she (or anyone in NYC) is outspoken as the office leader? Or so I have heard. Not their "culture". Get over it. NYC should be running Milwaukee and needs more direction on a daily basis.

    2) Feels like LearnVest as we all knew it is really proprietary asset of NWM now. Not a con necessarily. But goal of employee here is to grow NWM, not LearnVest. Great impact to NWM but no longer mission to be a top financial planning company as LearnVest standalone. That seems to have stopped after the deal

    3) as mentioned above, Tech and Product seem to be battling for turf with Northwestern senior management.

    4) Sterile versus a real startup. This ain't no startup. This is an office for Northwestern. I get jealous hearing about the tech sprints that the old guard used to do, fueled by a new scotch each time.

I have been working at LearnVest full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    -Smart colleagues

    - high quality learning experience.

-work / life balance is reasonable. crazy and chaotic in streaks but pace is definitely set in NY not Wisconsin

    - Good case example of acquired business assuming large role within bigger company. Only the start of trend of tired, big companies setting up shop via m&a in NY, SF, LA. IMO Prob makes employees focused on integration in high demand.

-recommend to someone looking for young company feel but stability and tradeoffs of more politicized corporate america

    Cons

-need clarity on emphasis of learnvest business as external or internal platform.
those not involved with Northwestern activities need transparency on where standalone learnvest is going

-milwaukee based insurance company. i have few friends who think i work at state farm (the place with aaron rodgers on tv ads). sort of knew this was case when i joined. leaders have been increasingly direct on this when hiring, could have been more open historically

-per earlier comment. do not recommend to someone looking to change the universe via mission based startup. Northwestern wholesome company and brand but that is who you are helping change into modern age

    Advice to Management

    more openness from mill-e-wah-que
