I have been working at Kiewit Corporation full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

People, there's a wide variety of experience to learn from. You often get to work on some large signature projects which you can be proud of

    Cons

A lot is expected of you, especially your time. A 9-10 hour day is considered or even short. You are not rewarded for your OT, it is expected of you

    Advice to Management

Lessen the work load of people. Switch to an hourly model. Things like flying on your days off for work should be rewarded, not expected

I have been working at Kiewit Corporation full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    - Great learning experience with many scopes given to you
    - Given a great deal of responsibility early on and many people are willing to help and teach expertise
    - Employer cares about you and will retain you even during downturns if your performance is good
    - Many opportunities can be present if you are willing to move

    Cons

    - Very little growth within the company and can be given many new responsibilities but title and position stays the same
    - Career reviews seem more about reaching an HR objective than they do about career growth or bringing about any changes

    Advice to Management

Recognize your employees and reward good behavior before your top talent starts losing their spark or starts applying elsewhere.

I worked at Kiewit Corporation full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Great benefits, people to work with, lots of employment growth and opportunity

    Cons

If you are willing to sacrifice your soul and family (if you have one) then you will do well. Management expects the impossible and has little regard for the personal impact, opinions and well being of their employees. I've seen many people let go for questionable reasons and given a carrot to sign hr letters that they wont file legal action after the fact.

    Advice to Management

Stop treating employees like disposable labour and take care of your assets

I worked at Kiewit Corporation full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good benefits, RRSPs, lots of paid time off.

    Cons

Worked on site where we had HORRIBLY unprofessional HR who would run around leaving passive aggressive notes on things and tell other employees about HR issues to gossip.
Notorious for covering up safety incidents
Very, very sexist - senior management asking female engineers to clean the kitchen/order food for meetings, female superintendents being the only superintendents not invited to become shareholders...
Sexual harassment on site was rampant and they will never take it seriously.
But the worst part overall is the HR department.... absolute nightmare, horribly unapproachable and unprofessional department that sets the tone for low morale.

    Advice to Management

Take care of your long term employees!

    Pros

IT-savvy company... everyone talks about automation and good company to see all sides of the construction industry.

    Cons

The more years you spent in the company, you become jack of all trades and master of none, which is not bad if you want to spend rest of your life there. average salary.

    Advice to Management

IT integrates a company but it is other ways around in Kiewit :-) Too many systems which do not talk to each other.

I worked at Kiewit Corporation full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great way to get field experience on large, interesting projects. The pay is excellent when you factor in project uplifts (up to 100% on some cases, usually at least 15%) and living allowance (up to $800/week in one case) and the benefits unmatched. The management is dedicated - this is an old school company that treats everyone like family (if you want that - see cons...) and the employees were friendly and from diverse backgrounds.

    Cons

Different divisions of the company have a lot of independence - it really matters which district you join (if you didn't start off right, talk to people on the projects and switch). Work/life balance is nonexistent. If you're lucky you'll get a turnaround schedule like 10/4 or 21/7 (minus travel days, of course). Otherwise you'll relocate every 2 years. Either way expect to be without family and friends.

    Advice to Management

I have no idea how you expect to retain enough dedicated employees as the current wave of 20+-year shareholders retire. Any new shareholders I knew (myself included) quit after a couple years for slightly less money and way more happiness. I know you tried and I did see big changes in HR while I was there, but the old-school model of company loyalty you seem to depend on is dying.
