I worked at Kansas State University part-time

    Pros

Housing and Meals part of compensation

    Cons

Incredibly time consuming position with management always wanting more without incentive. Felt like a 24/7/365 job that was hard to balance school or a life outside of the role.

I worked at Kansas State University part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Climate and culture was very inviting, people are eager and available to help and collaborate, they find a way to get you what you need for projects, a lot of opportunities

    Cons

Administration needs to work on communicating and resolving issues more efficiently. Facilities and labs need to be updated.

    Advice to Management

Communication is key, develop better systems/methods for resolving individual student issues such as problems with course equivalents, tuition support for online classes, and better follow-up with other things.

  9. "Very disorganized and chaotic environment"

    Doesn't Recommend

I worked at Kansas State University full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The job paid the bills. Good retirement plan if you can last through the waiting period to receive the match. Good benefits. Great resume filler. Companies like to see past employment with large organizations.

    Cons

There were more people in positions who shouldn't be than I've ever seen in any other organization. How can one effectively manage or oversee what one does not understand? You don't have to be a subject matter expert in all areas but at least have a foundational understanding of job responsibilities. Group think drove me insane. The "we've always done it this way" mentality coupled with no initiative to do more work than necessary was and probably still is costing the university a lot of money, which it did not have. People performed processes without understanding why they were doing them which led to a lot of passing on of bad or non-compliant processes. Team work was a joke, there was a lack of ownership and authority between departments, and succession planning was non existent.

If you enjoy day to day chaos, no work life balance, silos, and lack of leadership, KSU is the place to be.

    Advice to Management

Hire qualified people for respective positions or provide professional development and learning to bridge the gap. Adopt a succession planning model and implement it. Be open to outside influences who've been successful in prior positions outside of KSU. The "KSU" way is not the only way. In fact, there are no processes from KSU that I have adopted since leaving. There is a huge reason why and KSU is lucky that outside authoritative agencies have not looked deeper into the way the organization is run.

I have been working at Kansas State University part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Friendly, fair, and supportive. This is a high-quality learning environment.

    Cons

Kansas politicians have ruined education in the state over the last few years. With reasonable funding this campus could do so much more. This is not the fault of Kansas State University, however.

    Advice to Management

Continue to pressure legislature to increase education funding.
