I have been working at KPFF full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Good pay, semi-annual bonuses. If you work hard, you are recognized. Able to work remotely in inclement weather, and any overtime is paid or can be used as comp time. Flat organization provides lots of exposure to various projects and clients.

    Cons

Some people are working from home too much. Certain PM's will throw you under the bus to save face for their screw-ups. That being said, try to make a good impression on people you like working with, so you have a good outlook, and variety of work.

    Advice to Management

Sometimes the PMs who bring in the most work are not good managers. If they have a better business relation, pair them with a midlevel engineer that can assist with red line reviews, allowing said PMs to continue bringing work in.

"Great for gaining experience quickly, but unclear career progression"

I worked at KPFF full-time for more than a year

      Pros

      - Opportunities to take on lots of responsibility in a short amount of time. Great for building up skills quickly as a junior engineer. - Young office with amazing co-workers who are passionate and determined. Many people are more than willing to answer questions and work through problems together. Any positive outlook is due to the passion and drive of the younger staff and the managers who recognize that and are able...

      Cons

      - Depending on your group, you can get stuck with certain projects. You must be vocal and adamant in order to not get pigeonholed into any design category. Needing to take initiative is one thing, but having to without much support is sadly more common. - Flat organization structure and ambiguous career trajectory make advancing in one's career very unclear and subject to favoritism.

      Advice to Management

      - Younger staff need support not only with technical skills, but also (an even more importantly) with management and leadership skills. This is especially important when younger staff are so frequently given management roles on projects. - Add structure to reviews. Defining personal goals, discussing career trajectories, and setting performance metrics (and, of course, revisiting them) with each employee will improve...

      Pros

People are great. Interesting projects. Potential for advancement.

      Cons

Advancement without a college degree is a challenge. Principals run the gamut from great mentorship to judgemental critics.

I worked at KPFF full-time for more than 5 years

      Pros

The majority of people were very supportive and flexible work schedules.

      Cons

Very slow to respond to bad behavior

      Advice to Management

If people tell you that someone is awful to work with, you should not only believe them, but take corrective action, no matter how talented of an engineer they are.

I have been working at KPFF full-time

      Pros

Top notch and a huge breath of resources are available to engineers. Senior staff is busy but commonly takes time out of their day to answer any questions other engineers have.

      Cons

My experience tells me KPFF sells themselves a little high. Still a solid company.

      Advice to Management

Be more realistic and honest with your employees and the people you interview with.

I worked at KPFF full-time for more than a year

      Pros

      City is awesome. Free coffee

      Cons

Principals and Associates will treat you like garbage. Ranks are filled with B players, thinking they are A players. Best engineers move on after just a couple of years. Expect high turnovers/layoffs the moment there is shortage of work. High working hours and Overtime pay is 1.0. Structures Principals are not good people. Civil and Surveys are now short of worthless, the moment key players left the company.

      Advice to Management

High turnover should be a concern. Company makes lots of money, but unable treat employees the way they deserve.

      Cons

Great company for most people, works best for those who are self-starters and take the initiative

I have been working at KPFF full-time for more than 10 years

      Pros

I've been with KPFF since I graduated from college over 20 years ago. There's not a better consulting engineering firm for those that are looking for a supportive business organization structured to foster individual growth. I've been able to transition through the various stages of the first half of my career at KPFF and have come to realize that we truly have a unique culture that's focused on client service and staff...

      Cons

No cons. The benefits are much better than described in some reviews. KPFF has a dental plan!

      Advice to Management

Continue to keep the focus on building relationships through trust and don't ever lose sight of the long-term objective of perpetuating the practice/profession through stable (and thoughtful) transition. Management has gone to great lengths to do this in the past and continues to do so today.
