    "RPS Disaster"

     in Boston, MA

    I worked at John Hancock

    Pros

Brand Perceived market share Job opportunities abroad

    Cons

John Hancock RPS has gone through so many changes in the past 36 months that it’s an unrecognizable company. Most legacy senior management has left or “retired”. Hard working and qualified managers were fired under Re-org and replaced by unqualified outsiders who all had connections to New York life. Service teams (CSM, new business and RMs) are completely entitled. They are being fed a “Not my job” mentality by their management. Sales Management is micro managing. Product is so far behind its competitors. Most plans are being serviced in the Philippines by reps who can only understand partial English . The Canadian service teams are lazy and think the clients work for them. The US based RMs think they deserve 6 figures just by breathing. By the end of my tenure at JH was embarrassed to be associated with the company.

I have been working at John Hancock full-time

    Pros

    - Flexibility to work from home - Ability to rotate to different positions

    Cons

    - They (senior management) don't particularly care about employee retention or development - Inconsistent and dishonest about promotions - Extremely limited exam support- system is designed to prevent abuse of study time rather than to help students get through exams - They do not listen to employee feedback and are fine with high turnover

I worked at John Hancock full-time

    Pros

Good benefits, compensation package. Overall, fellow employees are smart, hardworking, collaborative. Lots of opportunity for career advancement

    Cons

Most of senior management has been there too long and do not value new ideas/fresh perspective. They need an infusion of new leaders from the outside.

I worked at John Hancock full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Benefits - very good selections offered, medical, dental, vision, life. Competitive rates. Strong tuition reimbursement. Auto and homeowner insurance discounts available to employees.

    Cons

Extremely poor upper and senior management. Too much dead wood being retained in the area of Management. Way to many micro managers.

    I worked at John Hancock

    Pros

The benefits are above average compared to other similar companies. Great opportunity for up to $7,500 in tuition assistance for graduate school per year. Generous paid time off.

    Cons

Very little feedback from senior management regarding forward career progression. The salary is not up to par with similar positions elsewhere. Ambitious and creative thinking is not encouraged instead relying on the "old way" of doing things

I have been working at John Hancock

    Pros

The work/life balance is great at JH. The hours vary but it's typically a 9-5 or 8-4 with flexible lunch hours. Environment is laid-back, casual, and low demand. Benefits are good.

    Cons

Career development/progression does not exist unless you "don't rock the boat" and become a puppet to your boss. Ambitious, strong-minded, independent-thinker and self-motivated people do not and will not fair well here (especially in this particular department) because the environment and senior management do not support innovation, change, or recognize talent when they see it. They base everything on who goes to lunch together, etc. Not professional working environment, but just a time waster. This department needs to be outsourced (and should have been gone a long time ago) to provide better efficiency for the company. Overall, no motivation to even try to be efficient/productive.

I have been working at John Hancock

    Pros

a lot of opportunities to learn new skills, a lot of opportunities for career development, great training programs, options to rotate to different departments

    Cons

Gets more and more difficult to get to senior management positions. The environment depends on the department you work in. A lot of old times who resist change.

I have been working at John Hancock

    Pros

The benefits are good. The people you work with are great. Depending on department, flex time is available which can be very good for reducing stress.

    Cons

Lower management tend to look out for themselves and are not good at helping employees with career goals. Senior management are much better in such areas. Headquarters location is awful; there's nothing to do in that area. Salary is lower than peers at other companies with same education and experience. Lower management gossip is out of control. Employee retention in Finance is poor.
