    No opinion of CEO

I worked at John Hancock full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

    - A lot of management support - Solid training program - Great people to work with - Lots of opportunities to get involved

    Cons

    - Don't get paid overtime unless it's specifically outlined in your contract. Management's answer to the large amount of overtime that some departments work is "that it's not encouraged".

    Advice to Management

    Pay your burnout workers overtime!

I worked at John Hancock for more than 10 years

    Pros

Good Benefits and good working environment. There are a lot of opportunities for interesting work and there is a casual environment. Excellent work life balance.

    Cons

Not a lot of promotion opportunities. It is a bit of a clique there. People in the clique get promoted no matter what their experience is. This can be frustrating at times.

    I worked at John Hancock

    Pros

Large company with a mature culture. Was a great fit for me. A very high level of professionalism in everyone I dealt with.

    Cons

Company did seem to struggle with how to deal with contractors at first, but they soon sorted it out and invited contractors to all department meetings.

    Advice to Management

If core businesses are done by contractors they need to ensure that employees have and understanding as well in case the contractor leaves.

I have been working at John Hancock full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Looks good on your resume when you want to move on

    Cons

OUTDATED systems. Get rid of Lotus Notes and Windows 7. Contact Apple and get apps written that will better suit your business. All system platforms are old (PALLM? Seriously?). Old Boys Network still very much in play. The only way to get promoted is to be buddies with someone or be Indian. Too many jobs being moved overseas to "lower cost environments" like China and the Philippines.

    Advice to Management

Terrible management structure - restructuring certain departments is basically done annually. Too many meetings that accomplish nothing, other than waste your day. Old computer equipment, and terrible email system forced on JH by Manulife. Too much outsourcing, and then taking things back in house, and repeat. Bad communications - you find out about new policy or upcoming things at the water cooler, rather than through your manager.
