Interesting projects, need clear direction early

    Pros

The compensation and benefits. Freedom to give feedback interdepartment. Location has a fair cost of living for the income. Project has breadth and depth, thus interesting challenges. Free food. Relaxed feel when not crunching.

    Cons

The leadership does not seem confident of decisions made. Lacking clear direction in early projects. (Mostly art, some design) Lacking communication of vision thus lacking buy-in from implementers. Micro managed to some degree in the single player design department. Long crunches last year of each project.

    The definition of toxicity

    Pros

Potentially big Call of Duty bonuses, good pay

    Cons

Very toxic leadership that relies on yelling, profanity, intimidation. The studio is run like a frat house, and you're either one of the boys club or you're not. Everything is about being bigger, louder, more badass. The bigger personalities lord over everyone else. Bonuses are dangled in front of you like carrots to keep you in line. Very definition of bro-culture.

    Typical Game Industry Corporate Gig

Aug 6, 2021 - Director of Technology in Los Angeles, CA

    Pros

Some amazing talent to work alongside. Clear leadership and reasoning for the vision of what the game is. Successful games can pay great bonuses. Clear expectations for crunch and "ship year" mentality to complete projects.

    Cons

Planning-to-crunch is policy here. It is a planned-for part of the development process, even before goals for crunch milestone are crystalized. Zero appetite to measure or make improvements to crunch. Turnover is not seen as a bad thing, a part of doing business. Bonuses are hugely discretionary, vary heavily person-to-person.

Lots of great people. Studio management is an acquired taste.

    Pros

Working on huge titles with a talented team.

    Cons

Pat Kelly unnerves most people he comes into contact with. Bro culture.

    Big games, big problems

    Pros

Free lunches when in office. Stocked kitchen. Small gym. Good parties. Decent bonuses when sales are good.

    Cons

Extremely toxic leadership since Pat Kelly took control, which leads to a generally toxic work environment. Long hours. Yelling at people, putting them down publicly, and behind backs. Most people will throw others under a bus to avoid being ostracized. Last minute decision making leads to worse crunch, fueled by Activision making decisions from outside. Sexist, bro-y culture is common.
