I worked at Industrial Light & Magic full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Not challenging, little overtime, good perks from Disney, working with some of the best people in the industry

    Cons

Not challenging. Even if you're senior, you'll mostly get junior work when you start. Managers can be very impersonal. No chance for advancement. Embarrassingly low wages, and they'll expect you to still be able to take lots of time off between projects. Almost no raises given, so with inflation, you end up making less money over time. You feel like a cog in the machine. Employees are disposable. They advertise annual bonuses, but then end up not giving them out. You get constant emails about how Disney is making billions of dollars each year, and see how the CEOs have multi-million dollar wages, but then they nickel and dime all of their employees. Much of the software is over-engineered and unnecessarily complicated and out dated.

    Advice to Management

Be more honest and personable with employees. Disney has really led ILM into the ground, and I don't see that changing.

I have been working at Industrial Light & Magic full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Not one besides the fact it's got this big name and good benefits.

    Cons

If you are not friends with the right group of people you are out. You might say that's any company out there but I've been at almost all of the big companies in the industry. Nothing even comes close the how ILM works.

    Advice to Management

Stop giving out any kind of work related special treatment to your friends. It's so painfully obvious. Stop treating your drinking buddies in the departments like employees first class and the rest like disposable attachments. Stop giving them the best work unconditionally and the rest who doesn't suck up to the gods of the departments are neglected. Stop giving long contracts and staff to only your drinking buddy sweat hearts. It's so obvious. And for God's sake stop promoting the most useless people just because you are friends with them. Everybody on the floor sees what your are doing.

I have been working at Industrial Light & Magic full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

You get some perks, and sometimes if you are lucky you get to work on a nice project, and if you are very very lucky you get a nice shot and if you are very very very lucky, the sup will not take it before you finish it to give it to one of his preferred accolytes and call it his own and add it on his reel.

    Cons

    Everything.
It is ruled by americanised culture, high school back-stabbing and rumours.
You need to have your nose completely browned out to get a few decent shots.
You need to take condescending treatment very well cause even if you are smarter or better learned (very easy thing at ILM) than the higher ups, they will regardless tell you how to do a roto...that's right, petty ignorant behaviour left and right.
Your artist input is a goner in this place, no wonder why the vfx community states this is where compers come to die.
Pay is inferior for the kind of work you do here where you gotta be a do-it-all and jack-of-all-trades.
End of year they will tell you how well they made in the Billions but they NEVER give you part of that money which you actually made them earn.

    Advice to Management

Start giving bonuses to hires no matter the contract length, it's immoral what you are doing.
Maybe you need undercover people to check the hire ups behaviour? Sing, Van are a mess, people need to get axed.

I worked at Industrial Light & Magic full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

I work at ILM 1year and a half. I loved it. I was in the creature department. I come more from a rigging background but I love Zeno, the soft for doing simulation. The first 3 months were really confusing, but the community around Zeno at ILM in all the different facilities is huge and made my life easier.
You have a good perspective career if you stay and if you prove you are good and willing to not have a good pay.

    Cons

Average pay, they play with the fact a lot of people wants to come.
Lot of overtime but it's common in the VFX

    Advice to Management

give a better raise to your artists if you value them. Try harder to keep them or people like me who love the company will leave again and again.

I worked at Industrial Light & Magic full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    - Some of the projects are good
    - There is a gym
    - There are some cool people to work with
    - There is free food and drinks sometimes
    - You get to see crew screenings of movies for free

    Cons

    - You get harassed by junkies and homeless people right outside of the office
    - There is a LOT of overtime on every project and it's still getting worse
    - People from other studios are hired for lead or supervisor jobs instead of promoting people already there
    - There are a lot of double standards:
    1. Friends of management can say and do things other people would get fired for
    2. Women bad at their jobs will get a different position or a promotion and keep getting paid to do a bad job, but men would get fired for the same thing
    3. If you aren't friends with management or the right supervisors you don't work on the best projects or get good shots or get promoted even if you are talented

    Advice to Management

    - Get rid of the people there because of favoritism and politics and get rid of the management and supervisors doing that
    - Promote more people already working there instead of strangers from other studios
    - Fix how much overtime everyone has to work on every project
