I have been working at Imperial College London full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

    - Surrounded by motivated, intelligent, people - Fantastic location - Freedom (PhD supervisor dependent!)

    Cons

    - Mechanical engineering building suffers from poor maintenance, constant plumbing issues, lift problem, toilet leaks, which are frustrating day-to-day and embarrassing when showing visitors around. - Tendency to prioritise investment in the superficial (new signage, screens, facades etc.) whilst neglecting basic functions i.e. running cost-saving programme on food outlets leading to decreased quality.

I have been working at Imperial College London full-time

    Pros

It is a challenging environment in a highly prestigious institution. My colleagues are all supportive and generally hard-working and clever. The research group is well funded and respected.

    Cons

Management of graduate students is sometimes lacking; distance between PIs and students can be big, and postdocs don't often take on middle management roles.

    Positive Outlook

I have been working at Imperial College London full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Imperial College truly has amazing facilities and a wide variety of very helpful principal investigators. Specifically, the film facility and FACS services are manned by a few technicians with a world of experience in the technologies.

    Cons

When undergraduate students return in the fall, the dynamic of the university completely changes and drives the researchers back into their offices. While there are several campuses, the South Kensington campus is the most well-located, but it also has the least space for collaborative discussion.

I have been working at Imperial College London full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Great drive for success and to stay a world leading institution Constantly forward looking and trying to modernise facilities Opportunity to work and interact with some of the best and most interesting academics and students in the world. Great careers service, seminars and other opportunities Great location in South Kensington

    Cons

Constantly focused on finances and run a bit like a company rather than an academic institution. Sometimes feels like the priority is not research but rather bringing in money and spending it as efficiently as possible to promote the College's image and budget. Could encourage communication and collaboration between departments and labs more strongly
