I have been working at IFC full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Great franchise. Great work exposure and opportunity to expand into different mandate and regions. Incredible organisation to learn and have a sense of transforming individuals and communities.

    Cons

Very political. HR function is very weak and there is lack of transparency in job promotion. Currently undergoing various transitions with limited strategic buy-in internally and leadership challenges, particularly in some regions.

I have been working at IFC full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Substance, meaning, travel to developing countries. Development impact, esp if you’re in a country office. IFC may be the most relevant org of it’s kind. Smart people - in 9 years I’ve met great people, some difficult, but no dopes. Hard working, diverse, and dedicated people, for the most part. The work itself is interesting and compelling and the impacts are often tangible.

    Cons

Role of World Bank Group is weak now, private investment flows dwarf the efforts of WBG. There is an element of entrenched bureaucracy’s and the place is extraordinarily risk averse. Management & IFC tries hard to apply good methods, but the culture remains hidebound.

I worked at IFC for more than 3 years

    Pros

Cutting edge knowledge and experience, great working environment, decent salaries,

    Cons

lots of internal politics, too much top-heavy organization, not too many people to help you around, normally you would not be given proper feedback for improvement, cant plan a long term career since always short term contracts with very differing expectations each time

I have been working at IFC full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

The best people here are world-class investors. Excellent brand recognition, especially in emerging markets. Extremely diverse workforce. You will travel and do transactions / assignments in places you never imagined.

    Cons

Very bureaucratic-- especially as you become more senior. People spend too much time getting in each other's way, and playing politics. Promotion based on politics and tenure, less on performance. The best people (especially people whose nationalities give them mobility) gain experience and leave.

I have been working at IFC full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

IFC staff are from all over the world, and most of them believe in the mission of the organization. Although it's developmental, it's not flaky, IFC takes a serious, private-sector approach to long-term developmental problems. Whether in banking, agribusiness, business environment, SMEs, there is room for creative thinking in your work.

    Cons

IFC is very bureaucratic and hierarchical, operating on a 1950s-style management system. It is not a meritocracy. You may do excellent work but be denied opportunities because of your nationality. In Washington, there are so many managers and directors running loose that you'll end up using your MBA to make Powerpoints for your boss.
