    I have been working at Huron Consulting Group full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

    Good people with a good culture. Location outside of Portland in Lake Oswego is nice. Good work life balance. Very stable management team.

    Cons

    Software practices are very conservative due to HIPAA requirements. Actual number of developers is very small, and stable management also means that new ideas are slow to gain adoption and can be met with skepticism.

    Advice to Management

    Bring in some new leadership with more web scale software architecture experience. Also ramp up investments in software security. Assert some more control to behave as a real software company within the overarching Huron organization. Hiring should not be held hostage to Huron corporates ideas of utilization rates that ensure everyone is too busy to innovate.

    Pros

    Excellent place to start after college to gain technical and professional skills. Young and fun start-up environment that emphasizes good team culture. Competitive salary, benefits, and generous PTO policy

    Cons

    This is a consulting company first and technology company second. Terrible work/life balance with consultants calling analysts at all hours of the morning and night. No technical career advancement after Associate with no career paths other than corporate management. Too many managers and directors that do not act with integrity (good employees from all types of positions were fired for not toeing the line).... Constant fear of being blamed for even the smallest of problems if a consultant or client reported issues. Roles weren't clearly defined and so you may do multiple things from a traditional BSA role to a developer/QA and client relationship owner all at the same time. Legacy software is incredibly outdated (1990s) and utilizes old code that has never been updated consistently across all clients. No effort made to standardize anything from a technical standpoint. Knowledge management is severely lacking (internal wiki is a joke). Software development processes lacking as a whole without proper development team or industry development best practices. Consultants drive all work and don't care about following proper development protocol. Company bends over for clients by incurring technical debt which is never repaid and leads to massive problems for clients in the long run resulting in extreme overhead.

    Follow proper industry software development and provide clear career paths for individuals who do not want to go into management. Improve work/life balance by putting in standard business processes.

    Awesome coworkers who bring it everyday. Lots of flexibility to move around and experience different phases of software lifecycle. Love the vibe of the Portland Office. Management is very supportive of new ideas, let's you run with them, and gives you credit even if it didn't materialize into something tangible. Coworkers and management are committed to doing great work for our clients, but also keep an eye on... having fun at work. Great place to launch and build your career

    Cons

    At times things can seem to operate a bit in silo's. Some items like knowledge management could be better and more accessible, but given the growth of the Healthcare segment it's understandable that this might be lagging some. Comp at times can be a little behind the market, but generally catches up.

    Pros

    Great learning opportunity for undergrads fresh out of school and pays pretty well out of school. The benefits and perks are more than fair.

    Cons

    Promotions requirements can be a little unclear especially anything after the Associate level. The workload can greatly very from team to team and project to project.

    Pros

    - Good technical and consulting training for recent college graduates - Learn the corporate ropes and work with a large amount of well knows clients through the US - The PTO is comparable to most companies - Fun culture, lots of team events

    Cons

    - Many of the employees become team leads and supervisors quickly. This causes micromanagement and competition so everyone can justify their positions - This is not a place for an experienced hire to work, the policies are built around teaching college students - The amount of PTO is decent, the way it's distributed (rolling) is terrible and it never increases no matter how long you have worked there - Management... doesn't listen to the employees, they have moved the company into a declining position in the market

    Pros

    Great benefits, awesome co-workers (almost all), plenty of training opportunities, great place if you're just starting your career.

    Cons

    Can't argue with management (always right mentality), your salary will eventually hit a cap once you've been there for a while, long hours sometimes weekend, no work-life balance (especially for people with family). Most people are stressful.

    Advice to Management

    Be honest to your employer, when things are bad say that it is bad, you can't sugar coat everything forever. Don't promise anything you can't keep and also please treat your employer as human being rather than resources.

    Pros

    The staff includes some bright and committed people, ongoing training is a priority and taken seriously

    Cons

    Heavy hierarchy of management, everyone is a supervisor, which creates an environment of micro management and overly critical reviews (eg. specific verbiage used on the phone is critiqued). Hard headed management has the "with us or against us" attitude. Good people leave with no counter offer.

    Advice to Management

    Reduce the levels of management...teams of 8 don't need 3 supervisors. Stop focusing on 15 min increments of billable time, it creates too much overhead. Treat experienced hires as such, they don't need to trained and monitored like 22 year old recent college graduates.
