    Cons

I haven't been here long enough yet, so nothing to complain so far.

I worked at Houghton Mifflin Harcourt full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Good work-life balance. Decent health benefits. Good place to work if you have a family to support. Fairly central location. Modern open-plan office with up to date equipment and software. Competitive salary - if you push hard during the hiring process. You can kick back and not a soul will notice.

    Cons

Multiple layers of management: too many Deciders, not enough Makers. Very slow decision-making even compared to other large corporations. Departments are siloed. I spent more than 50% of my time in large, inefficient inter-departmental meetings. Design decisions made by managers with no training in design and no interest in user experience. If you want any interesting projects, you'll need to... initiate them yourself and prepare for an uphill battle through layers of bureaucratic approval. It took me a good 6 months after leaving to get my mojo back. Don't expect to produce much for your future portfolio. Minimal professional development offered through 3rd party online services (lynda.com, skillshare).

    Advice to Management

If you want innovation, listen to the creative people making your products. Understand that your subjective preferences have no place in decision-making when they are not aligned with your users' experience.

I have been working at Houghton Mifflin Harcourt full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Supervisors are very supportive and professional.

    Cons

Human Resource Department didn't provide all the necessary information to meet Company expectations and deadlines to be eligible for Benefits in the first 30 days for NEW HIRES. If you are a NEW HIRE, request all of the information about gaining access to company email account, ONE web-site, Employee Central, Benefits deadlines, and NEW HIRE policy, procedure and employee manuals during your first week of... employment.

    Advice to Management

Ensure all NEW HIRES are provided with necessary information to meet all eligibility and training requirements with deadlines as set by HMH during the hiring process.

I worked at Houghton Mifflin Harcourt full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Reputable company and products Decent benefits Nice people You are only expected to work 9-5 because you're hourly, with a whole 1/2 hour for lunch

    Cons

Training consists of sitting in front of 150 videos for 3 months where you learn very little because it's information overload. You have to ask your co-workers tons of questions because there are a million processes. This is INSIDE sales, be prepared to be micro-managed on Salesforce. Reports, reports, and more reports. Unreasonable expectations. Know how the commission plan works, if you're not at 80% you... make very little. Your experienced co-workers can make or break you as your manager will have lost interest in helping you with the tons of questions you will have. Poor training to really understand how to SELL the products. If you like lots and lots procedures and like digging and digging to find an answer, this is the job for you. All the processes slow you down, it's highly detailed and administrative work most of the time.

    Advice to Management

You don't train people the right way. Train your support staff better. Fix your broken processes.

I have been working at Houghton Mifflin Harcourt full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Smart, capable peers Work-at-home allowed Some smart change initiatives are underway

    Cons

Micromanagement stifles productivity and initiative Multiple levels of review/signoff for everything cause delays Inability to make timely decisions destroys schedules

    Advice to Management

Renaming departments and product "innovation" will not solve the problems. The company is too hierarchical and top-heavy overall. Clear out an entire tier of VPs and aim for smaller, nimbler working groups.
