I worked at Hill's Pet Nutrition full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Research facilities, known in industry for product innovation, longevity among premium pet food companies.

    Cons

Too slow to react to market, won't stray from traditional thinking, low customer service standards, below average renumeration, very arrogant.

    Advice to Management

No point giving advise to management, they won't listen any way.

I have been working at Hill's Pet Nutrition full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Ethical company, high level of integrity and research. Quality and safety of products is always top-notch and dedication to the veterinary profession.

    Cons

Risk-averse culture can sometimes be a challenge, difficult to try new approaches for the business at times. Senior management from parent Colgate do not always understand the Hill's business.

I have been working at Hill's Pet Nutrition full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

    Generally good work environment
    Good pay, great benefits
Market defining company with outstanding research-based products
Employees can bring their dog to work, which is great. The office dogs are rock stars and people love having them swing by for pets and treats.
Worksmart program allows some employees to work from home 1-2 days per week

    Cons

Corporate masters at Colgate cause a lot of problems and few benefits. Whole departments have been outsourced to Mexico and/or India, moving maybe 2-3 people to new jobs and terminating the rest. The work outsourced to India and especially Mexico generally takes years to approach the lowest level of competence we had before. As soon as anyone in Mexico learns their job and starts to do it well, Colgate promotes them to jobs in the US.
Colgate-mandated third party "solutions" cause far more problems than they're worth.
Numerous benefits have disappeared over the last 20 years as we get more Colgate-centric. Some due to aligning with Colgate, others due to vendors refusing to work with us anymore because of the constantly rotating third parties Colgate keeps pushing on us.
While upper management seems to embrace the core values of having a great workplace, competent middle managers are rare.
Company as a whole is a decade or more behind the times on things like social media and e-commerce. With competition ramping up tremendously over the last 10-15 years, we can't afford to be complacent.
Innovative products based on fantastic scientific research are our strength, but the current retail environment fears science and only embraces silly fads with no basis in fact. Awkward.

    Advice to Management

Understand the drastic difference between Colgate and Hill's. Colgate can pick products to promote and shelve based on spitting out 12 new flavors and discarding all but the best seller. That method doesn't work for Prescription Diet.
Quit firing people en masse and sending work to Mexico, and quit lying to us about how great the transition has been. We can see the results.
Quit replacing people with third party solutions that don't work.
Quit using Hill's as your testing ground for new managers, then taking the ones that stand out back to New York.

    BRING YOUR DOG TO WORK!
Opportunity and support to bring in new ideas and make an impact
If so inclined, really great social work volunteer opportunities
I love coming to work everyday

    Cons

    Location
Lots of exciting things going on so we need to add to the teams otherwise people are spread too thin

    Advice to Management

It's fantastic that we are all working as one to make the world a better place and live our mission every single day. It's great to watch us tap into our collective intelligence and empathy when working together to transform lives. The only thing I would say is while it's easy to get caught up in our day-to-day, keeping the lines of communication open across the company is important and contributes to our already collaborative culture.

I worked at Hill's Pet Nutrition full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

As a subsidiary of Colgate; great benefits.

Company car (pay $200 a month for it, no opt out option)

All expenses paid when traveling (but they make you itemize every cent in an antiquated expense system.)

You get to keep hotel points (I'm trying, ok)

    Excellent product and mission

Great job if you're single and have no attachments. Otherwise... there are plenty of other companies to work for.

    Cons

No accountability to management so you can try to get away with anything, but so can your bosses.

    Too much overnight travel

    Bad for families

Bad for veterans (miserable treatment and disrespect if anyone finds out you're a veteran. They'll treat you like some knuckle dragging-meatheaded brute. Just because we spent our youth in the dirt and brass while they were in college; they look down on us. None of the leadership has any time in service)

Mandatory relocation if you want a promotion

The company has no clue how to manage or market their brand and they ask for help from the team but implement nothing new.

High turnover. A lot of people quit this job because of abusive leadership. I saw 6 people leave in my short time here. These are great paying career level jobs that people walked away from because they were being treated so poorly.

Don't work here if you love your spouse and children. You'll barely see them. If you hate your family, sign up and you'll be in good company.

    Advice to Management

Review your district managers for territory manager turnover and hold them accountable for it. If a DM has continuously high turnover, how much money do you think they wasted on training and supplies for the company? How can you explain that to shareholders?

How good can a leader be if they can't even lead a team to stay more than 2 years with the company?

I can tell you right now, more letters of resignation are coming.
