I worked at Highmark full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Decent Salary, Good Benefits, Good 401k matching

    Cons

Bureaucratic, Blind Leading Blind, NO work life balance whatsoever. The amount of times I was asked to work late, or expected to work late, was obscene for a salaried position. I would then receive a lecture about how I wasn't to work late so often followed up shortly thereafter by one of my many managers wondering if I got the work done or had time for additional projects.

I have been working at Highmark full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

401k which most companies have now. Nice vacation package.

    Cons

medical benefits- you either take a high deductible plan or pay out the nose for insurance. Most people I know who have Highmark insurance pay a lot less than the employees of the company. There is absolutely no work/life balance. Work a minimum 50 hours a week, usually more and still can't complete work. We have a mandatory 45 hour work week- not 40 hours like most companies. If you don't do your 45 hours a week it's held against you on your performance review. They continue to get rid of employees with knowledge which leaves the rest of us struggling to learn more and take on more work. About half of our workforce in my divisions is located in India. We have to have meetings with them before 10 AM because they work different shifts. This means if you have a programmer assigned to a project and you have an issue after 10am it has to wait until the next day. Most programmers, analyst and testers from India have no training and are almost useless to us. We spend more time trying to teach them than doing the work. The language barrier is huge. We can't understand them and they can't understand us. We implement things that aren't even tested just so we can say we met the due date. Not enough people to complete large projects because employees are spread too thin over multiple projects.

    I worked at Highmark full-time

    Pros

Great wages and benefit package, plenty of room for advancement. My department recognized the value if work/life balance.

    Cons

Lack of clarity on who was in charge or responsible, a high number of “that’s not my job” responses. Many departments existed in a vacuum. Archaic computer system. Poor treatment of people with physical or mental disabilities requiring time out for treatment. This was especially true of employees who openly admitted to drug abuse and sought help. The company’s approach to its own employees suffering from addiction, especially considering its business is health and medicine, is disgraceful. Employees are given time to go to rehab and promised their job will still be there. Management goes above and beyond to help. However, when you return, it’s a whole new world. Employees are not given a chance and are nit picked, harassed, and treated like less than human. They make it impossible to succeed and and actively work towards termination. It’s sad and something I saw happen to four very good employees.

I have been working at Highmark full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

    Gym, store, nice cafeteria, clean

    Cons

No work/life balance. Gym at work but never a minute to use it. Processes are constantly changing and becoming more cumbersome. Spend so much time doing administrative work there isn't enough time to do your real job as an analyst. Required to work 45 hours a week but most people are working closer to 50-55 hours and still can't meet the project deadlines that are set by people who have no clue what is involved in implementing a project. I have been at highmark almost 30 years and the last 6-7 years have been so bad that I think about quitting every day. I'm just hanging on for 3 years to retire. Employees are not appreciated by upper management.

I worked at Highmark full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Decent on site cafeteria. On site pharmacy, health center and no cost gym are the only plusses I can think of.

    Cons

Work life balance does not exist. I personally was asked to suspend my education in order to work additional hours (unpaid, as I was salaried.) Staff is not respected. When I told my co-workers of my upcoming departure, absolutely every one of them said that they wished they could do the same thing.
