Great benefits especially for the long term employees

      Pros

Without a doubt the best benefits for employees especially after about 5 yrs. You are eligible for company provide profit sharing starting in year 1 (@15% of salary to retirement account). Health care is a HSA that company contributes (if you get your physical) most of the amount needed to meet the deductible. Depending on position, you will be eligible for other benefits (which is usually within about 4-6yrs) like car allowance, a company vehicle w/ gas card, bonus, and company shares (which over time can't be touched by other companies).

      Cons

As an employee owned company you are expected to work like you own a part of the company....meaning that you do what is needed to make the project/job successful. Sometimes that is working extra hours or doing something not specifically listed in your job description. The hours are longer but in my experience, I think it isn't as much a Hensel Phelps thing as it is an industry thing. I don't know of any large (successful) General Contractor whose people aren't asked to work 50+hours. The company is aware of how important the work/life balance is and have actively made some changes but every project is different.

Great people to work with. Bad leadership and growth

      Business Outlook

      Pros

Loved most of the people I worked with, it is extremely structured and peocess oriented if you are that kind of person who needs direction on how to do everything. Great company parties and always a good team to back you up.

      Cons

Company grew to large to quick, it lost its culture. Growth is very limited and everyone is clawing to get a promotion to PE feom the OE and FE levels. Extremely political, promotion are more based off who you know and how you appear, rather than your work ethic and how you get the job done. Not a good place to be if youre not very politically correct.

Good pay but ghastly work-life balance

      Feb. 13, 2023 - Field Engineer
      Recommend
      CEO Approval
      Business Outlook

      Pros

Great pay, amazing driven passionate people, pretty set career paths (this can also be a con)

      Cons

The hours are ghastly (around 55-60 hrs a week) with no overtime pay and it is expected that if they need you for more than those 55 hrs, you have to be there. For young adults beginning their career, it leaves little to no time to grow outside relationships and interests, there are also no PE's really which makes it impossible for one to pursue their own PE certification.
