I have been working at Handy

    Pros

Flexible schedule, but that's it. Handy is the visible side of how service reaches customers. Handy doesn't employee cleaners, it solicits independent cleaning professionals to use it's platform. Handy is all about the tech-side of how it connects service providers. They like to look savvy, but I'd compare the shark mentality of this start-up to how Amazon feeds off of the backs of hard-working underpaid average people who run the hundreds of Amazon distribution centers around the world. It''s essentially slave labor. Handy is the poster-child for the ultimate middleman.

    Cons

Handy does not provide supplies to contractors, does not offer benefits of any kind, does not reimburse for travel expenses, does not offer training to contractors, does not try to set customer expectation, but rather sets up a system whereby contractors are rated and paid on a scale of 1-5 which determines who much they will earn (between $15 to $22 per hour). Customers quickly understand this rating system and unfortunately like to use it to deal with their home cleaner as they see fit. Somewhat sadomasochistic in effect. My experience has shown me that unfortunately the Handy system brings out the worst in people. As a professional home cleaner I've decided to leave this so called arrangement between Handy and myself behind (wound't refer to it as any type of partnership, that would be exaggerated). Handy created a system that keeps it's bottom line on a tight lease (that is contractors willing to work). Handy as a company is very concerned about it's bottom line (profit) and will market it's services to achieve it's end. It would be false to assume it cares otherwise. It's founders like many other young start-ups truly exist in another world that has little to do with cleaning your home. Like some great shark swimming through the waters it understands that there will always be contractors willing to attach and feed. Handy sends out 10s of text messages to contractors 24/7 to alert contractors to available jobs, or to ask contractors to call dispatch, but when it changed how it pays contractors it sent only 1 email to warn thousands of people of the upcoming changes. Handy is the ultimate parasite feeding off the backs of thousands of really hard working average people.

I have been working at Handy for more than a year

    Pros

Flexible schedule The only pro I have

    Cons

No jobs Awful customer service Can’t reach anyone Takes hours, sometimes 24 hours to get a response Pay doesn’t match the jobs Customers lie to receive free or discounted cleanings and you’re charged without an investigation of any sort Customers book the bare minimum and refuse to extend hours so you end up working over and not getting paid because if you don’t stay you’ll receive an awful review. Customers hate this service and take it out on the cleaners Handy doesn’t take any comment into consideration Reps don’t properly answer questions that you’ve waited hours for a response for. They’re incompetent! They say enough to get you not to respond. Rules constantly change Customers are allowed to cancel appointments and you’re not paid unless it’s 12 hours and under meanwhile workers are charged for cancellations up to 48 hours. No one knows where the cancellation fees go and you have to work to cover these fees and pay taxes on that money although you didn’t receive it Liars and thieves is what Handy is!!

Thanks for your feedback. We care about doing research about the market to ensure we're paying pros fairly and as much as possible. While we do our best to pay pros as much as possible we also have to keep in mind our operation costs which can vary from state to state. We offer 24/7 support to both pros and customers. We also offer insurance for every booking in case a pro accidentally breaks or damages something while on the job. There are various other operation costs we cover that support the safety and care of both pros and customers.

I worked at Handy for more than a year

    Pros

-Flexible schedule -Good amount of jobs (dependent upon market) -Depending upon your market try other independent contractor sites such as Wonolo, Shiftgig or Taskrabbit.

    Cons

-Carry your own vacuum -Pro cancellation fees -Customer cancellation fees -E-mail support is simply trained to literally lie from time to time. (Not all the time but they certainly will do what they need to do to make them "correct") -Starting pay

If a pro says they are going to attend a booking and the customers expects they are coming then only gives 24 hours notice when they are going to cancel, this is unacceptable. Especially, since professionals have ample amount of time to remove the job from their schedule, update their schedule availability, or reschedule the job by contacting the customers over the phone or in chat.

I have been working at Handy for more than a year

    Pros

Flexible schedule... I guess, you'd basically have to take every appointment available and then some

    Cons

Was fired because someone claimed a pair of shoes were missing. No notification, no investigation. I had been on the platform for two years and had over 725+ jobs completed with a 78% 5 star rating and this was my only source of income, which was not even sustainable. Dont waste your time. Customers are typically trash. Ridiculous expectations, but want to get the lowest time ( 2 hours) but expect a deep clean of an entire house. You can really only clean a studio thoroughly in two hours. The attitudes of a lot of these clients tend to heir on the side of entitled and rude. The way the rating system is tied in with your pay you're pretty much a slave to the customer and have to do their bidding and stay hours over to complete the job frequently. The customers typically do not care about your time and totally expect you to stay over the time they actually paid for. Dont even think about setting the correct expectation at the beginning of the appointment or in the middle or end by telling them that they did not pay for enough time, they'll almost always take offense to it and it will reflect in your tip (lack their of) and definitely in your rating for sure. Anything under a 5 star rating drastically negatively impacts your rating. Mind you, I'm probably the best at this, if not one of the very top in the Los Angeles area, Handy is trash. after transportation/parking/buying your own supplies/ and all the free work you'll have to give up, its just not worth it. When you do have problems in the field, you can only reach out via email, though they typically respond really quickly, they often write you off immediately and I have gotten the feeling on several occasions that they did not work to completely read and understand what I had wrote before they replied, often leading to a back and forth in which I an ultimately found to be correct by another employee that responds and continues the email thread later in the day. Handy is totally frustrating. Not sure if the opportunities are dropping off or if the market is flooded or both. Handy reserves the right to change their rules and operations as much as they want. Have seen much change since 2015, largely unfavorable to the workers. Used to get client information the night before, now you only get it hours before the appointment. The window for which you can cancel an appoiment without penalty has been drastically decreased, but a client can cancel on you up to a hour before and you'll only get 15, mind you that slot took up a real appointment i could've had that i expected days leading up to the appointment. Handy is trash on so many levels

    Pros

flexible schedule, on time payment, relatively easy getting jobs through the platform

    Cons

ridiculous and expensive cancellation policies, pay structure is designed to keeping you at the lowest pay rate, long wait times in response to questions, queries, and issues from management and btw only emails no phone call, they can kick you off for just about any reason, its like dealing with and working with robots. the system is always changing mostly to your disadvantage.
