I have been working at Handy as a contractor (Less than a year)

    Pros

Flexibility, pay is not that bad.

    Cons

Not being able to see customer's address in advance anymore. Before I would
Commute like 10, 20 mins and now is like an hour because I can't choose anymore.

    Advice to Management

This new system is terrible and customers keep cancelling as much as they used to.

I have been working at Handy as a contractor (Less than a year)

    Pros

Getting paid Quickly, Make Your Own Schedule

    Cons

Rating system, cancellation policies, Pro help, fees, etc

    Advice to Management

They do nothing to help the contractors that do all their work for them. The cancellation fee's that the contractors have to pay vs. what the costumers have to pay are straight up unethical, the costumer only has to pay if they cancel less than four hours before the appointment but as a contractor we have to pay between $10-$40 if we cancel less then 48 hours and even if you cancel with more than 48 hours before the appointment it still effects your keep rate which is total crap considering the costumers do not even get keep rates when they should, especially if they are chronic for last minute cancellations. The costumer can constantly cancel and get no penalties, even if you arrive to a job and they do not show up, the contractor has to wait 30 MINUTES and if they still do not show up you only get up to 3 hours pay, sometimes I have traveled over an hour to a 6+ hour job to have that costumer not let you in and you get a mere $50 instead of the $100+ you were suppose to have on that job. Handy also does not have anyone you can actually talk to for Pro help, its all via email because that's how incredibly lazy they are. They have zero flexibility for their contractors, one time I needed to cancel a job last minute because my roomate collapsed in the bathroom and broke their nose and got a concussion so I had to drive them to the hospital and nothing from handy, would not even dismiss a portion of the fee. Also their rating system is not effective at all. As a contractor you cannot see who gives you what rating, and who gives you what thing you need to improve on so it could be a specific thing the costumer would like you to improve on but you would never know. You also cannot see what rating a person gives you unless its a 5 star rating and even then you don't know who gave it to you. USELESS!!!

Thanks for sharing your experience. Certain fees are in place to provide a 5 star experience to customers. It's not an enjoyable experience for the customer if a professional doesn't arrive to a job... More

I worked at Handy as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

Potential to make private clients, work when you have time

    Cons

They will over charge you for canceling a booking and there is a absolutely nothing you can do about it. If you try to email them about it they won’t fix the problem or admit it. As a cleaner, the money you make is literally your blood and sweat so when someone else claims it and snatches it like a thug it can hurt so much and make you feel very angry and disappointed altogether. This company has robbed me of 200.00 dollars if I add up all the times I was wrongfully charged and overcharged. They fired me when I asked for my money back. I will never forget this experience my whole life because I cleaned 6 people’s apartments at my expense. I usually never give ratings but I had to warn everyone out there. if your considering working with handy, please be cautious.

    Advice to Management

I am extremely regretful that I worked for a company that are robbers in disguise. Please stop stealing money from us. We work hard for our money and you should be ashamed of yourselves for stealing from hard working cleaners. I hope you guys can find it in your hearts to change .STOP stealing our hard earned income.

I worked at Handy as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

flexible schedule, on time payment, relatively easy getting jobs through the platform

    Cons

ridiculous and expensive cancellation policies, pay structure is designed to keeping you at the lowest pay rate, long wait times in response to questions, queries, and issues from management and btw only emails no phone call, they can kick you off for just about any reason, its like dealing with and working with robots. the system is always changing mostly to your disadvantage.

    Advice to Management

I worked at Handy as a contractor

    Pros

    Good paying jobs
    And easy to start

    Cons

Most customer complains about the cleaning isn't done right and just because I didn't save pics to prove my rating went down. The mess up part of the part when you only get people who has complains writes the reviews the ones who are happy never bother to review . Not fair! So I got let go because people are happy usually don't wanna write reviews and stuck with bad reviews with people are picky. And besides I was new so didn't know certain rules. Some lady gave me bad rating cause I was hand washing all her dishes instead of using the machine

    Advice to Management

You should give your worker more time and more chances don't just let them go unless they can be in the system for like three month.

I have been working at Handy as a contractor

    Pros

You can work your desired hours which is good if you have a family, the pay is good but you have to work hard of course.

    Cons

While some customers are very pleasant some on the other hand are very cold, i am a young black british lady and i feel like i have been looked down upon by some customers, no matter how hard you scrub the 3yr old water marks of the shower cubical or how hard you scrub the fecees from the toilet some customers are not grafeful for the work you do and have the cheek to leave negative comments, then handy leave you a email telling you that you work is not satifactory which then leaves you feeling rather deflated. The other down side is there is no direct contact for handy, it is all through email. As a pro i have had many problems with customers one customer had only bleach NO MOP NO BROOM and his sink was blocked and wanted his floor mopping amongst the other routine jobs, when i explained that i do not have a mop he then told me to get on my hands and knees :/ what a cheek ..... That is just one of a few problems. The problem with handy is that the do not value their employees i feel we do not get enough credit after all it is us doing the dirty work literaly..

    Advice to Management

Have in mind that we live in a not so nice world and some people are not so nice, there unfortunatly is predudice and racicm that still exists... And some people will never have anything nice to say, maybe us as handy pros can take before and after pictures so we have eveidence of our work carried out, this way it will not just be the customers word that Handy goes by..

I have been working at Handy as a contractor (Less than a year)

    Pros

Work assignments are sent to you via app. You can elect to have notifications of assignments for the day sent to you in real-time. You can order supplies through the app but I wouldn't recommend it. Buy your own supplies, it's cheaper. The Handy cloths are great though. The cloths hold soap very well and you only need a little soap at a time which saves money. You can select which location you want to work 7 days a week. I like the pay tier. I got a $2 dollar raise in less than a month. You don't have to solicit your own client. If a client forgets to cancel a job, you still get paid if the client isn't home.

    Cons

Handy cancels jobs too much for me. Once your job is cancelled, you're pretty much out of money because there aren't any jobs in that time slot for you to claim anymore. Handy sometimes takes too long to post your tips. You can never reach them to speak to them. They only care about their customers but not their Cleaner and it's our sweat they get paid off of while giving us a percentage. There is no travel reimbursement. There was a power outage in NYC on the subway and I was stuck on in the train station for nearly an hour. Once on board the train, it was stuck for another 45 minutes in between stations. I notified my client of this and Handy. Even though my client said she understood, was very nice about and would reschedule, they still took $50 from me and were going to pay me $42.50. I had to walk home which was over 30 blocks and it's summer. When I informed Handy about it, they had no compassion for me and wouldn't refund my money and I'm 5-star rated with my first recurring client earned within 2 weeks of being employed with Handy and I started working with them in June. With that said, I don't see myself staying with Handy long although I really love what I do and pleasing my clients. UPDATE: My money was refunded but they took a recurring client from me because of it and tried to make it seem like the customer cancelled when I have an email stating what they've done.

    Advice to Management

Your customer service team sucks Handy! Be available to your Cleaners as well as your customers. We are the ones making you look good off our sweat. Your business model isn't that unique that it cannot be duplicated and improved upon. You should have a separate number for your "contractors". Your fees are unfair. Your cancellation system is unfair also. Once a job is cancelled, we contractors lose money and there's no way for it to be recouped. Sometimes the cancellation will come within hours of the job and by then it's too late. Some of us have classes and families and it really interrupts our schedules with the cancellations and no incentives. There's no travel reimbursement. You should offer more incentives and perks and you wouldn't have such a high turnover rate. I'm really disappointed in my recent experience with Handy. You're basically paying your customer service for them to do absolutely nothing for your contractors. I don't encourage anyone to get involved with Handy until you treat your Cleaners with more value and respect. Check your representatives and your system and you wouldn't have so many people walking away or pending lawsuits.
