Thanks for the excellent feedback. We do love that the company is currently quite flat and collaborative - it makes for some cool innovations for our students and their parent/guardians. And I agree that it is fast-paced and not for everyone. So thanks for sharing that candid feedback. -Jason

Unprofessional CEO and CFO who are glorified bullies

    Pros

Some Lovely People working in the company in Finance, IT and other areas.

    Cons

One of the most unprofessional places I have ever been exposed to. Very toxic work environment. The CEO Sends an update everyone week with coloured red X's and green ticks based on if you met your goals from the previous week. He then grills each person publicly in front of everyone as to why they didn't meet these goals, creating a toxic environment of humiliation and fear among staff. Communication between CFO, CEO, managers and teams is spotty, inconsistent and there is no manners expected, hiding behind a honest feedback. You can be honest without being a bully or discriminatory. Expectation to work late every day without fail, no-one takes lunch breaks, you are expected to work through lunch. The only focus of this company is making money, acknowledging it is a start up, even start up's should care about their employees. Lastly, It should be noted it's mandatory for each current employee to post a 5 star review on Glassdoor (its on their goals for the week).

Hi there, I'm sorry to hear that you didn't have an overall good experience but I do appreciate that you enjoyed working with members of our team. I agree that they're lovely people. I'm sorry that you saw our culture and operations as unprofessional. It sounds like a number of our expectations were not clearly communicated. I'm sorry about that and we'll aim to do better. A couple of things to provide context on in response to your cons: 1. Our weekly messages and standups are intended to ensure that everyone is on the same page. We do this to keep our main priorities top of mind and to hold our team accountable for their promises. We've borrowed this structure from other top companies who aim to keep their organizations in synch. 2. We don't have a CFO - so I'm not sure if you're referring to. In any case, thank you for this feedback. We'll make sure to keep coordinating our messages across our leadership team. 3. It sounds like we didn't clearly communicate that we aim to provide feedback that is both actionable and aiming to assist. We take bullying and discrimination very seriously and have let team members go because they engaged in bullying and discrimination. 4. There is no expectation to work late or to work through lunches. Nor would a manager ever ask you to do this on a regular basis. There is, however, an expectation to meet performance expectations. We find that when our team is focused and prioritizes correctly, they can achieve their performance expectations during normal working hours. 5. Glassdoor is not part of any formal process of ours; however, we do fortunately have 40+ team members who have chosen to leave a positive review on their own accord. As I mentioned, I'm overall sorry that you didn't have a great experience. We'll take your feedback into account. And I wish you all the best on the next step of your journey.

    Cons

Poor management, no regard for mental wellbeing, high rates of burnout among employees. They also pay very poorly as a base salary and expect you to work weekends, evenings and holidays while consistently moving the goal posts for 'growth and opportunity'

Hi there, First off, I'm glad that you enjoyed working with the team and that was a positive part of your time here. We're very proud of the group of people we've assembled to help develop next-generation leaders. As for the cons and advice, thank you for the feedback. I'm sorry that this wasn't a better experience for you. I'll address a few aspects of your feedback here: The hours - Yes the expectation is you work evenings and weekends as that is the standard working hours for this role. Every educator works 12-8pm and one weekend day. However, it is still a five day work week. In terms of burnout, I am not sure what you are referring to as educators can only be scheduled for calls in the 8 hours that they have in a day - so there isn't really any opportunity for burn out. The only reason educators may add hours is if they are off track for targets and choose to do so. This usually only results in adding one day at the end of the month and only if the educator fell off track. We have a 50%-50% split between base and performance compensation for this role. OTE for the role is $100k and your salary also increases at the 1, 3 and 6 month mark to put you well beyond market rate. We designed this structure with an external HR firm and have comfirmed this is top of market. Ultimately, goal posts move for growth if there isn't performance. So yes, if you didn't meet performance expectation we would not enable a horizontal or vertical move. However, those that meet performance targets are often given leadership opportunities/responsibility. All the best, Jason

    Pros

    - seeing my colleagues and getting through the day together

    Cons

    - expect us to hit unachievable targets and compensate us way below average - minimum wage - the whole fast-track your career by 5 years is just a marketing tactic to get people to apply and slave their life away - management would sometime swear at the team. - doesn't let people leave until they hit the daily quotas but doesn't offer overtime. -management doesn't really follow the script or sales process themselves and they expect everyone on the team to be spot on with it.... (unrealistic) -promised someone a promotion date but when the day comes, they delay it multiple of times - no integrity with their words even though they preach it on a daily basis...

Thanks for your review and feedback. I'm sorry that this was your experience with us. And while I do believe that the fast-track career by 5 years in one year is a great marketing tactic, it's also backed up by numerous stories of that happening in the company. It's true that this doesn't happen for every employee, but the opportunity is certainly there and we have a track record of doing it. To be clear on wage: Our compensation for an SDR role is at market rate, and as with any commission-based roles, quota attainment outside of normal working hours is not compensated as overtime. However, our expectation is that our team hits target within a 5 day week and within normal working hours - something that is NOT the norm for most sales positions. We've successfully ascended over 70% of our SDRs to an educator role in the past 3 months well ahead of their planned ascension after they hit quota. So while I understand that it isn't achievable for everyone, we do have a fairly strong track record of achievement in this position. I'm sorry this wasn't the case for you. As for swearing at the team, we have a strict no-bullying or harassment policy and if that is or was a concern, we'd expect that to be addressed with a manager or HR. That said, we are not completely void of swearing in the office or in meetings. I think we can be better here, myself included. So thanks for that feedback. Our management isn't perfect and still has work to do with walking our talk. It's always a work in progress, so I'm sorry that that wasn't a congruent experience for you and we'll work to do better. I'm sure that might have felt frustrating. And as for promotions, we can also be more clear there. While we generally have a pretty clear ascension and development plan, I think that if a development opportunity gets misconstrued as an actual promotion, it can lead to confusion. I'm sorry if that was the case for you. Thanks again for your feedback and I wish you all the best in the future! -Jason

Thanks for your feedback here. I'm sorry you feel that we wouldn't listen to the feedback as that's not the culture we intend to create. The CEO and COO (me and Madison) are definitely intense and competitive with high expectations of our team. I know that sometimes this has team members feel that they can't come forward with feedback and it's something we need to continue working on. If you'd like to provide that feedback directly, please email me at jason@grantme.ca - I would actually like to hear it. I'm sorry that you felt the expectations were not realistic and that the training was subpar. I agee that our expectations are high, but we have a strong focus on ensuring each team member is winning each week which includes ensuring that each team member's goals are realistic each week and month. When team members get behind early in a month, that can be a challenge to come back from and we can continue doing a better job in encouraging and supporting our team to get back on track when they fall off. And we can definitely continue to improve our training to help our team get there. As for working hours, we're actually quite proud that as a bootstrapped 4-year old startup, our team has very good work-life balance - which I think is quite rare in that context. Of course there is still the odd late night or extra day that comes from getting a project done or hitting targets, but for the most part our team prioritizes their health and family and has a plan to ensure each of their personal, health, and professional goals are met. I'm sorry that this wasn't your experience - we can definitely keep doing better here, so thanks for your feedback. All the best, Jason

    Pros

The culture at GrantMe is the most riveting and exciting environment to be in. The fast paced nature of the company allows for years of growth to be condensed in several months. The company is made up of individuals who are motivated and keen to learn. What I love about it most is that nobody is seen as better than someone else just because of their title. There are no camps, no gossip, none of that. Coming from other industries, I was worried I would be stuck in another toxic environment but this is quite the opposite.

    Cons

If you’re not motivated, you can’t keep up in a fast paced work space that’s constantly changing…definitely not the place for you. I would say that one drawback would be for folks who aren’t able to be fully aligned with the purpose of the company they work for. This is definitely not a job where you come in and do tasks and leave. There needs to be a love for the work you do for the student you help.

Culture is for a very specific type of person which wasn’t me

    Pros

I met some really nice people while I was there but most of the people I was friends with don’t work there anymore so can’t say what it’s like now

    Cons

Definitely have to like hustle culture and be ok with no work life balance and very limited time off. People were applauded for working on the weekend, really late and on holidays all the time. I also saw quite a few people get fired very shortly after starting for not being a “culture fit” and turnover was super high. There were a few elements that felt a little too micro managing for my style including having to write a report every day of what you did in a public slack channel and having to “restore integrity” if you joined a zoom meeting even 1 min late ( which meant basically explaining why you were late and what you’re gonna do to never be late again) . They also use “radical candor” which I’m not a fan of. to me it feels more like an excuse to be brutally honest and removed the element of professionalism from giving feedback. We had to be in office at least twice a week through all of COVID so keep that in mind if you’re looking for flexibility. These are just some things I would’ve liked to know before working here - maybe this type of culture works for some people but it definitely wasn’t for me

Thanks for your review. Appreciate the feedback and I agree with most of it. Specifically, we do expect meetings to start and end on time and we do use radical candour. Our goal with radical candour is to challenge directly while caring personally. And while it isn't for everyone, we do find that it helps to keep everyone on the same page. I'm sorry that it wasn't for you. Some context that is missing with that we did go fully remote when we were required to do so. We also stuck directly to the public health order guidelines throughout the pandemic. And we worked with employees who had specific health or family concerns throughout the pandemic to adjust their schedules. There definitely is a hustle culture here. And we are very particular about our culture, so we do let people go who are not a culture fit. This is definitely de facto for high-growth startups. It's also something we're working towards making more smooth and predictable as we grow and mature as a company. Some updates that we've made are 1) We've got a dedicated resource who is improving our hiring process to ensure that expectations are aligned prior to joining 2) Planning further into the future to prevent the late nights/weekends/holidays. While this isn't expected, it is appreciated and sometimes needed to complete the job. Thank you for the feedback. Sorry that it wasn't for you. And I wish you the best in your next role. I hope that it is a good fit for you :)

Thanks for the feedback here. We're definitely proud of the team that we've assembled and the culture they've created. As for the working hours, as you know, we stagger weekend shifts so that our team is still working 5 days. And like many sales roles, when pushing for targets, more than 40 hours per week can be required. Although most of our team is able to hit targets within regular working hours. We'd love to continue working with you to support you in achieving targets while working within those hours as well! -Jason
