I have been working at Government of the Province of Ontario, Canada full-time

    Pros

    - salary is competitive with the private sector
    - benefits (particularly for those with seniority) are second to none
    - opportunities to engage with varying subject matter and interact with people from different sectors and all walks of life
    - the opportunity to make a difference and help people on a broad scale

    Cons

    - recruitment is not transparent; getting a job more dependent on who you know than what you can do; interview process is antiquated and inauthentic; performance and development process is a joke
    - advancement is difficult; a tendency to put people in a box and leave them there -- if you do good work you are rewarded with more work and kept where you are
    - not a culture of mentoring; few senior leaders have the time or inclination to do so and many seem threatened by those who want to advance (more focused on their own insecurities and advancement than on what is ultimately best for the organization and the people of Ontario)
    - meaningful training opportunities only available to the chosen few

    Advice to Management

Complete overhaul of the recruitment process. Improve training for leaders and staff as well as succession planning; keep an eye on the big picture rather than getting carried away with the crisis of the day; create a culture that rewards smart innovation and supports people who give their best advice even when it may prove unpopular (speaking truth to power). Manage public funds as if they were your own; keep an eye on the bottom line and ensure taxpayers are getting value for their money.

    Pros

good pension plan, good work location, some good professional development opportunities, overtime rarely required.

    Cons

quite often, projects did not result in any outcomes so no purpose to work; work is overly specialized; unskilled leadership; favouritism in distribution of work assignments; went for years without a salary increase.

    Advice to Management

Align your actions with your policies and messages.

I have been working at Government of the Province of Ontario, Canada (More than a year)

    Pros

Benefits are great, pension is good, 37.5 hour work week is pretty standard with little expectation to work more. Salary is fair.

    Cons

Limited upward mobility, very difficult to get rid of people who don't pull their weight with union protection, little ability to be creative.Upper management has no clue about frontline staff experience.

    Advice to Management

Stop rolling out new (& untested) programs & applications in November! Don't award IBM any more computer contracts.

    Cons

Sometimes dealing with irate and unreasonable clients but usually their issues can be resolved by explaining what their options are!

    Advice to Management

The Management are very good and understanding. They should always put themselves in the shoes of the front line workers though.
