I have been working at Government of Ontario, Canada full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Working at TBS, a central agency, is super fast-paced. Your files are often government priorities that make news in the following weeks and months. Exposure to senior leaders e.g. Deputy Ministers and Ministers, is commonplace. The work puts you 'in the room' as major policy decisions are discussed and decided.

    Cons

Management is often disorganized and short-sighted; treading water by managing urgent tasks but never really implementing a long-term strategic vision that people actually follow. Careful analysis and research by professional staff is ignored or over-ridden by 22-year-old political staffers with no real experience. Perks like you would find in the private sector are non-existent: you won't find any free coffee, or team...

    Advice to Management

The wage freeze for management is causing us to bleed leadership talent, and should be reconsidered. I'm not a manager, but 90K starting salary and no inflation increases for a manager of a team of senior professionals is completely uncompetitive with the private sector in the GTA. Some managers actually request demotions because they get paid the same to be a staffer with way less pressure and better hours.
