I worked at GlaxoSmithKline full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

    - Strong focus on values that guide decision-making. They don't just talk about values, they live them.
    - Positive global citizen
    - Passionate, brilliant employees who want to make a difference
    - Solid product pipeline
    - Global footprint creates international career path opportunities
    - A company you can be proud to say you work for
    - Strong, inspirational leaders at the global level

    Cons

    - Frequent changes in global corporate strategy. Creates a challenge in remaining focused, and disruption in trying to interpret what new strategies mean for individual-level execution
    - Insufficient focus on holding local country management accountable for strong leadership
    - Some markets have experienced a significant number of resignations in recent years (e.g. Canada)
    - Pendulum has swung radically towards risk management, SOPs, and strict enforcement of policies without employing common sense (e.g. sales managers feeling pressured to "report" reps for having a bottle of water in the vehicle...against fleet policy)
    - While not necessarily a "bad thing", the company is struggling to find the right balance of good governance, employee empowerment, and common sense. Wildly varying interpretations at the balance have created significant tension and friction in parts of the company.
    - The intense focus on governance can sometimes manifest as an attitude that can be perceived as "holier than thou", both within teams and with external parties.

    Advice to Management

Keep up the focus on a strong, valued-based culture, and leading the way within the industry to do the right thing. Just don't paralyze the business while doing it, and avoid trying to position those with a differing view as being somehow less ethical. Most importantly - cherish and empower your people: they are by far your most valuable asset.

I worked at GlaxoSmithKline full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great products. Great people to work with.

    Cons

Tries to simplify a lot of processes which end up becoming too complicated than before. Guidelines and policies become too restrictive and translate to the loss of competitive edge compared to other companies.

    Advice to Management

A lot of good people have left the company because of their new "ways of working". Don't fix the wheel if it's not broken.

I worked at GlaxoSmithKline full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

A great facility in Mississauga with the Pharma team. Plenty of good people trying to do their best. Great flexibility for lifestyles such as early Friday's, VPN access to work remotely. Starting to catch up to the other consumer good companies . Andrew Witty is a great leader.

    Cons

Global structure was still not working efficiently but it takes time. Local management very weak. Little marketing direction or leadership, focused on a few team members and disregard the work of others. Poor sales leadership but a great sales team underneath looking for guidance and support. HR was not visible or impactful.

    Advice to Management

Clean house in the executive level. Bring stronger global leaders to the Canadian business who can tap into training, strategy, and leadership.
