      Decent perks, crazy business practices

      Pros

      Some of the great things about GDC is the compressed work week. Although the days are long, it can buy you an extra day off every two weeks which is invaluable during the summer months. The benefits are so-so along with the pay, but everything is negotiable there and if you use the right manipulative tactics there, you can bully HR around in the good times.

      Cons

      The place is incredibly mismanaged. When projects die people are left to their own devices to grovel for work elsewhere and it leaves you feel like you are playing musical chairs. Individuals are allowed to move around regardless of the state of the project they are leaving. Often there is no accountability to work done in the past. Senior Management seems to be all over the spectrum with an inability to manage large programs, understand the customer or lead a team.

      Pros

      Fairly large employer for such a small town

      Cons

      Senior management doesn't seem to notice that the economy has recovered. Salaries have stayed stagnant and talent is leaving for opportunities in other locales.

      9/80 Schedule Used to have talented engineers but forced them to leave due to poor senior management On-site gym but they are moving soon Nice coworkers

      Cons

      Poor senior management Promotes and keeps workers based on hours worked instead of productivity Lays off top talent in favor of mediocre workers Hires mediocre workers only because they have a security clearance Low raises (less than 1%) Promotions based on seniority and not merit All SCIF cubes do not have access to the internet Slow to update software tools and technologies Very little automated software tests Uses Excel for software review tool Does not recognize and reward top talent No formal training

      Pros

      Benefits aren't bad but that's about all that's good.

      Cons

      Senior management micro-manages and lacks a coherent business strategy. Innovation is stifled. Far too many VP's for the size of the business.

      Pros

      I worked for an excellent manager with a terrific support staff. Common Processes were helpful. Living in the Berkshires of Massachusetts was beautiful and not very stressful.

      Cons

      Selection of personnel for senior management opportunities was sometimes bias based on personal relationships. Pay was somewhat stagnant even when performance results were high.

      Pros

      They pay was good and department management tried their best.

      Cons

      Morale was horrendous, they are not about their employees at all. Layoffs were rampant and business was sinking, mostly due to incompetent and callous senior management.

      Pros

      GD has great work life balance and is very respectful of employee responsibilities to family. Work is interesting. Management encourages and invests in employee training. Company is very disciplined with quality focus. For the most part, the people are great to work with and take pride in the quality of their work. Cutting edge technology and disciplined processes. Lots of flexibility.

      Cons

      Cuts to benefits in recent years; especially to personal time off (PTO). Significant PTO cuts were given to long term employees with increases given to new employees. It is obvious senior management does not value employees who have made long term commitments to the success of this organization. There is no compelling reason for employees to stay here long term anymore. Middle management does not address work barriers. They allow some employees to continuously put roadblocks up for others who are just trying to be successful. Work environment in recent years was downright toxic.

      Pros

      Good pay, interesting and rewarding work supporting our troops, flexible hours, friendly environment among the rank and file.

      Cons

      Generally poor management, from the project level up to the department and executive levels. Quiet folks are often out of luck, even if they excel at their jobs. Folks that buddy up to senior management seem to prosper, whether they contribute much to successful outcomes or not.

      Pros

      Working with some very good people with great technical expertise that are committed to doing a good job.

      Cons

      Poor senior management. Some bad acquisitions put the company in trouble. Managers whose business declined under their watch are protected and others pushed out the door. Senior management did not know how to protect and grow the business and got run over by the competition.
