      Business Outlook

      Pros

-Decent salary, good RSU -If you are a self starter, you will do well

      Cons

-Mandarin first company. Horrible culture. -Company is trying to do everything at once. Teams are stretched thin. -Management is poor. Direction is decided on the spot. -Nothing is planned in advance. -No innovation, just copy competitors. Scramble to recover when we are already late to the game.

Vancouver Office is a Diversity Nightmare

Jan 14, 2022 - Hardware Engineer in Vancouver, BC
      Recommend
      CEO Approval
      Business Outlook

      Pros

      - Pay and Stock - Technology and Technical Learning

      Cons

      - Management sucks - No proper corporate structure, experienced individuals sitting at the bottom of the career ladder and dump idiots sitting in senior roles :) - English is hardly spoken in Canada, diversity failure - Gangs culture (Chinese, Indian, Iranian, ...etc.) No inclusion if you are different. - HR sucks Asian mentality of fear-based management, with an ultimate focus on winning "Best employer on paper" awards.

Attn juniors / entry-level: Don't accept the offer

Jan 16, 2022 - Data Engineer in Burnaby, BC
      Recommend
      CEO Approval
      Business Outlook

      Pros

      1. RSUs and salary: The salary is just barely on par (and even a bit lower) with competitors', but the RSUs is what really gets you. 2. Since Fortinet is such a large company with a generally good public impression, you will encounter some skilled engineers. If you are lucky and make the initiative, you may get to work/learn from them 3. Some people are nice

      Cons

I worked at Fortinet for over 4 years. I wish I had better things to say, but I do not. I generally agree with the points made by other reviewers about the language biases, archaic methods, and mismanagement. If you are reading this and wondering whether you should accept an offer from Fortinet ... my suggestion is: Don't (especially if you are entry level or junior). With the exception of very (and I stress *very*) few teams, Fortinet does not provide good mentorship nor teach you industry practices that will develop your engineering skills. On the contrary, it may even hinder your development as an engineer. Upper-management sees you as numbers that fill spots. They will reorg you with very little notice (less than a week) and provide no reason for it. If you want to move laterally, animosity among teams and general disapproval from the upper management will often result in a rejected request. Product management is a mess: there is little cohesion between product management and the engineering departments. Team management is unprofessional. I have seen the extremes of micromanagement to no management at all. Managers may neglect communication with their own team members: from a month all the way to six months (!?) without a word. From all the teams I have been in and interacted with, I would say 95% of them do not follow most engineering best practices: no designing, no testing, no software development lifecycle in place, little communication, and little investment in modern software development tools. Please take it with a grain of salt as all this above was either my own experience or of those that I witnessed while at this company.

      Grab the RSU and go

Dec 15, 2021 - Senior Software Engineer in Vancouver, BC
      Recommend
      CEO Approval
      Business Outlook

      Pros

Stock keeps on going up so the RSU ends up worth a lot by the time vesting period ends.

      Cons

Terrible work life balance. No sizing for projects leading to insane hours. Management is top down and features tend to be technology map checkbox ticking. Drab open cubicle with no privacy. Need to pay out of pocket for parking.

Decent Compensation with Poor work experience and horrible management

Jan 6, 2022 - Devops Engineer in Burnaby, BC
      Recommend
      CEO Approval
      Business Outlook

      Pros

      1. Good Compensation and RSU Grants 2. No deadlines and pressure in *some teams. (I hear it's chaotic and crazy in other teams.) 3. If you end up in a team with a good manager and colleagues, you lucked out and might grow. (THIS IS RARE)

      Cons

      1. Management with Poor technical and management skills. Management is a bunch of yes men that lack leadership skills. They don't understand the existing issues and are good at putting up a pretence of all good to upper management—self-serving managers. 2. Lots of legacy code and systems with a HUGE backlog of issues and problems that were never fixed and tracked because of poor or, in most cases, non-existant project management practices. 3. Understaffed and don't do things unless everyone's a** is on fire. 4. Nobody here cares about the quality of the software they build. As long as it works, it's okay. Because people who write/code think they are here forever. 5. No code reviews, change management or tracking and patchwork maintenance all over the codebase. Get ready for surprises every day, All day. 6. Senior Engineers are almost non-existent. Forget about mentoring. 7. Communication is vague and unclear, and non-accountability is the norm. 8. Problems are tossed around people and teams and are never really solved. Wait until the problem is forgotten is almost a de facto policy. 9. If you are good at office politics, that's your way to grow in this company. 10. Outdated Tech, practices, process and mindset. 11. List can be longer. Don't fall for the marketing and sales pitch by recruiters. They are as self-serving as others here.
