I have been working at Florida Virtual School full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Best part is that you get to set your own schedule. It provides you some flexibility. However, most students call after 3:00 pm when they get out of school, so 5-8 are the busiest times of the day. Also, I Love working with my talented students. They have a lot on their plates and most work really hard in my class. They are doing great things and FLVS does offer opportunities for them to advance and to meet the demands of their busy schedules. Lastly, we provide a lot of support for disadvantaged students, students with disabilities and students struggling with school. Students can retake a semester for grade forgiveness and can move up to the next grade level. FLVS is filling a great need for our students.

    Cons

Too many students and lack of oversight. There is constant change and students transferred from other teachers for a variety of reasons escalate your work immensely. Some teachers simply don’t monitor their students and some have been working there for many years. This means that you have to work extra hours to complete the work they didn’t do and students are unhappy as they are expected to adhere to course expectations for the first time.

I worked at Florida Virtual School full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Work from home Pay is okay

    Cons

You are never done with work. It doesn’t matter how organized you are, you will be over-enrolled with students with never-ending required parent and student contacts and grading. You are expected to be available 8 am to 8 pm weekdays, but you will need to grade after hours to maintain work requirements. It took me months to decompress and and relax and not clock watch after leaving this job.

I worked at Florida Virtual School full-time for more than a year

    Pros

The school holiday schedule is a nice perk, and depending on your manager, you may work from home.

    Cons

You are required to sign an employment contract annually, but this means absolutely nothing. There is a section in the contract that explicitly states that FLVS can terminate your employment at any time for any reason, with or without cause, and executive leadership will not hesitate to exercise this clause to get rid of people that they don't like or that don't 100% fall in line. Or they will get rid of you so they can replace you with their friends or friends of the Education Commissioner. They complain about a lack of teachers, but there is a constant revolving door with teaching positions. Just search "Florida Virtual School" in the Orlando Sentinel. They got rid of one level of corruption and replaced it with another. On a side note, the salary ranges are low. Unless you are a teacher, you'd be better off in the private sector. On side note, Jodi Marshall is no longer the CEO. FLVS is now on their second CEO in as many years since she was forced out of the company by the previous board of trustees.

I have been working at Florida Virtual School full-time for more than a year

    Pros

You can work from home if your immediate manager is comfortable with that arrangement.

    Cons

Managers can be disconnected from their employees and remain clueless about the amount of work their employees perform everyday. Male employees will be compensated more than their female counterparts. Minorities are not treated equally regardless of the statements they make in the job ads.

I worked at Florida Virtual School full-time for less than a year

    Pros

    Flexible schedule, teamwork, administrative support

    Cons

Dealing with kids cheating is common, some parent issues.... similar to what you'd deal with at a brick and mortar school

  9. "Flexible but challenging"

    Former Employee - Teacher

I worked at Florida Virtual School full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Great flexibility and ability to connect one on one with students.

    Cons

Being an online teacher is challenging because of the constant pull for your time and attention. You don't teach and then head home. The students are with you all the time.

I have been working at Florida Virtual School full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

In B&M each year managing my PD was a challenge. At FLVS it is an after-thought. The support systems that are in place are unrivaled.

    Cons

Many teachers operate under the assumption that they will impress management by agreeing to work after hours and on weekends. To be honest when an applicant suggests that they are willing to do that it is considered a net negative.
