    Retail is Retail

    Pros

It's nice working with other people that like sewing Great healthcare benefits Get to touch all of the new fabric before it even reaches the sales floor.

    Cons

Management hardly listens to employee complains, but takes customers very seriously The pay sucks for what you have to put up with, customers expect you to be able to do calculations for them and to explain in fine detail how to do specific techniques, and to stand and brainstorm about their project with them. I wouldn't mind this, but not for minimum wage without even getting an anti-fatigue mat to stand on. If they find out you're good at working the cash register you end up stuck there, slowly punching in purchases because the system is archaic, having to hear a beep with every push of a button. And you'll look up to the service floor and see far less competent employees working on the floor, answering peoples questions, getting the privilege of walking around. And the employee discounts are meaningless when for the most part there is always a sale of some type on that is better than your discount.

Love the coworkers, not the job

    Pros

    - great discounts and first dibs on fabrics - lots of inspiration - you learn from your coworkers and can become a better seamstress - basic health benefits

    Cons

    - never any way to get a raise, not sure why. My older employees worked there over ten years and are still paid minimum wage when they work their tail off. Fabricland needs to treat their employees better. - customers can be extremely difficult to try and help. They expect you to have full experience in upholstery, quilting and or sewing in general and expect you to tell you how much fabric they need no matter how complicated their project might be. - customers lie about sales and try to trick you into getting a product cheaper, especially if you’re a new employee. This is unacceptable. -customers switch prices a lot of the time so make sure you’re familiar with each sale and fabric type. - foreign customers try to haggle prices with you and bully you into giving them fabric for free or some sort of deal. This happened regularly. - customers sometimes get confused as to what’s on sale and can get nasty if they have to pay for a membership to get a deal on a product. - older customers have been extremely rude to me and I’ve cried in the bathroom at least 3 times as a young adult. - when days are slow it can get extremely boring - an older coworker of mine had responsibilities and some power as a manager and was a key holder, an exceptional worker but was paid no different than the regular employees. How is that fair to him? - it’s way to easy to spend your pay check on fabric.
