"A once great company ruined by trying to change overnight."

    StarStarStarStarStar
    Current Employee - Account Engineer

I have been working at FM Global full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

401(k) matching Pension plan (if you dare stay long enough) Flexible work options (for some positions) Company vehicle (for some positions) Other standard industry benefits - insurance, ma/paternal leave, educational reimbursement, etc.... Annual bonus can be sizable - if company is profitable, however bonuses are not based upon individual performance. In years the company is not profitable, bonus is... nonexistent, even if individual performance is exceptional.

    Cons

The company has been likened to the Titanic of the industry for a long time - large, capable of carrying the load, but unable to turn quickly and is on a collision course. Two unprofitable years (across the entire industry) and there is a desire to change many things overnight. Most of these changes have been poorly implemented. For a company that forces the kool-aid that we are the best in the business, they do... not pay anywhere near the best in the business. Much of middle management has no backbone and only peddles the mud from upstream. Information only flows down. Middle management fails to relay feedback from lower levels to executive management.

    Advice to Management

Bring back employee surveys and actually act on them. Don't try to change too many things at once. Currently you're trying to correct 15 years of failures in 15 months. It's not going to work at this speed. 2-3% annual 'raise', is not a raise. It only adjust for inflation. This is not acceptable for employees that go above and beyond. Incentivize your people to stay rather than telling them 'you're dead to me'... when they jump ship.

I have been working at FM Global full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

The benefits are stellar! 401k with a 6% match combined with a fully funded pension! Great family leave options (if you can withstand the shame of using them). On par vacation terms.

    Cons

You aren’t valued as a person, or really thought of as a person at FM Global. In fact the current slogan is “Be FM Global”. Catch that? Not be yourself, or unique, or innovative, or even thoughtful; you are to be FM Global. Upper management thinks of us as totally and easily replaceable. But rather than remove the people they don’t care for, that make your life unpleasant till you quit. All this so they can run... the narrative that they never terminate their people. Work here and you will work for the best and most capable commercial property carrier in the world. Be warned that you will lose your humanity if you choose to climb the ladder here. Managers actively make decisions strictly for the numbers without a care for those who will need to implement. They stand behind their worker bees like human shields all the while prodding them to deliver forced rate hikes to even the most loyal and loss-free companies. Senior management is quick to brag about the successes as their genius tactical maneuvers while simultaneously blaming the lowly staff for failures. If you want genuine mentorship and leadership you won’t find it here. If you like the look of footprints on your back as the company touts its monstrous capabilities globally, you will fit right in. You should know that you will do all this while making about 30% less than your equivalent at a competitor. See how good that combined ratio looks when you realize it was accomplished by fleecing your paycheck. Have an upcoming life event that will require you to take some time off? Congratulations! You won’t hear that much at FM Global. Your life accomplishments are a burden to the company that will affect your promotions, raises, and relative worth in the office. Your honeymoon, birth of your child, and vacations are huge issues that managers begrudging accept you may take. They will guilt you constantly for taking time off work and hound you incessantly while you are gone from the office. Be ready for encouragement to work remotely while you are gone. You can never really turn off FM Global. Start here for the clout but leave here to be treated humanely.

    Advice to Management

Where has your empathy gone? Instead of being FM Global, why not try to be decent? The people who work for you are good people and deserve to be treated accordingly. Start paying your people a fair wage without making them feel like your slaves. If you make the people want to work hard for you, the result will follow. Force them to do your bidding and dare them to leave, and they will.

I worked at FM Global full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Depending on who you work with, the colleagues can be very nice and helpful.

    Cons

Pledges made in the course of the interviews are all forgotten once the ink is dry. Management doesn't care about the employees. Climbing up the career ladder only possible if you are a master sycophant. Hardly anything is communicated directly. In sum, the work atmosphere is really toxic (as already pointed out by others). Employees are frustrated. Best advice, don't even start working with this company. In most... cases, you will regret it.

    Advice to Management

Replace old management. Hire managers from outside the company to break the incestuous structures. Get back to good communication.

    No opinion of CEO

I have been working at FM Global full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Work at the office is balanced Agile changes for former IT department was established

    Cons

    - it is an "old boys club" style company, executive board is only male managers - diversity and inclusion strategy seems null - promotions are done without transparency - if you are not an engineer there is zero growth for you, no career paths at all, so think twice before entering - there are not clear HR policies in international operations, implementations are seen at the local level that are... "managers discretion" - there is no telecommuting / home office for office employees , - benefits need to be updated according to the population of employees (including millennial employee interests) -management do not listen to employees, there hasn't been an employee satisfaction survey in a couple of years already, last one that was done I didn't see any improvements

    Advice to Management

the executive leadership team should have female VP, also representation of HR and Marketing, many companies have these managers on their executive teams. Put attention to agile implementation, is done without considering the operations, so focus is being put in things that are not so important

I worked at FM Global full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Good benefits with subsidized healthcare and 401K. The group is generally willing to mentor, answer questions, and help you learn. There are opportunities for growth. There is a wide breadth of knowledge to gain working with different industries.

    Cons

Very little room for creativity or independence, management micromanages from the top down, atmosphere is conservative and traditional and takes time to progress. Still a boys club, especially in upper management, although this is starting to change. There is not a lot of flexibility at the local level even though this role can be done at home - you are expected to be in the office if you don't have a client to... visit.

    Advice to Management

Be open to suggestions for innovative ways to do things. Be open to change. Understand the workplace culture is changing, and teleworking flexibility benefits employees (especially those living in areas with typically high traffic rates and long commutes).

    Pros

Excellent vacation and sick time offerings. Excellent health plans. Stable company who has recently shown a sincere interest in getting with todays corporate America offerings and truly making their employees happy for instance telecommuting.

    Cons

Behind the times regarding telecommuting. At this time this is not an option. This is a very conservative company. Get the impression they want to monitor you all the time ie. not allowing work from home, insisting your Instant Messenger is always on when online, micromanaging by numerous managers. HR department has not been supportive of employees as much as they should be. The ridiculous comment "managers... discretion" should be removed. That's the default for everything it seems. MAKE A DECISION HR that's YOUR job! Leaving it up to managers individually opens the issue of inconsistencies within groups.

    Advice to Management

Give your employees more freedom to do their jobs and you will have happier employees. The young ones won't stick around if they are micromanaged and not allowed some version of telecommuting. Fix HR to become one that supports not only managers but it's employees.
