Pros

Beautiful store with great customers. Changing inventory is a visual delight each work day.

Cons

As long as this company has been in business, there should be no reinventing of the wheel. there's no training involved for management positions, so it's a sink or swim situation. You either have to be inquisitive enough to find files in databases that aren't well identified or accessible or chummy enough with someone who is willing to tell you what your job entails. But with the turnover rate as high as it is you'd be lucky to find someone working there more than a year. The inside joke is that you have to quit and reapply to get a raise. The owners are too much to themselves giving the impression that they don't care so much about getting to know their employees. It is rare to hear that your doing a great job from them and be compensated for it with a raise. They require you to not talk about your pay or be fired. Most people get $9 an hour and managers get $11. You might get a .25 raise IF you ask for it after a year. Everyone complains how you only get one raise even if you've worked there over 10, 15 years! New people start at a higher rate than folks who have been there longer which causes resentment. They don't increase the hourly wages for others so that they are equal. No bonuses except for the Broad St. greenhouse manager, Broad St. retail manager, Broad St. garden center manager, Florist operations manager, and Broad St. general manager. The fact that they get bonuses is a huge secret. Benefits are 5 PTO days after the 1st year, 10 after 2, and 15 after 3. No holiday pay except Christmas. There are so many blocked off time no one can take PTO that it makes out harder for those who aren't taking time off, because of low manpower. Health and dental insurance is available for a small fee. The word is that pay is so low because they provide insurance. Matching 401K is available but most people can't afford to pay into it or don't stay long enough to keep their contributions. Checks are waited for every two weeks to be handed out. No direct deposit, so everyone has to rush off to deposit their check before the bank closes. Lunches are only 30 minutes and hours are long sometimes 10 - 12 hours. Very little opportunity to move up either in position or responsibility. Can you imagine being paid $9.50 for the rest of your life?

Pros

Great company to work for. If you like plants, flowers, and people..,this is the place to be.

Cons

Typical cranky customers from time to time coming into the establishment. May just make it an extra challenge to brighten their day!

Pros

Good discount on plants and learning about flowers

Cons

My experience at Strange's was not a good one. The Mechanicsville location is falling apart in every way possible. The building has never been updated and is filthy. There are cracks, holes, cobwebs and critters in multiple areas of the store, the plumbing has been poorly maintained and leads to issues with the sinks and toilets. Management has unrealistic expectations for their workers since key products are regularly unavailable to complete day to day work, but if you can't make something correctly it's seen as your fault. Any feedback is disregarded, turnover is extremely high, pay is very low across all departments and doesn't meet the modern standards of living, and good luck getting a raise no matter how good you do or how long you have worked there. The upper management will always have an excuse why they can't, and the rules change depending on the day. The owners are either aloof and avoidant, or will demean and yell at you. Everyone else you work with will constantly gossip and divulge your personal information to other employees. There are people with vile and childish attitudes but they will never be reprimanded because they're friends with the right people. If you value your mental health and want to make enough money to eat on a daily basis, I would avoid working here at all costs.
