Discriminatory, typical publishing culture where upper management ride coat tails of staff - Anonymous Sourcebooks Employee Review

Pros

I honestly can't think of any except maybe one could say it is a foot in the door onto something else.

Cons

Firstly, HR has the highest turnover of any company I have previously worked for, making it impossible for that dept. to exist. Imagine there being nobody to speak to if an HR issue arises - very unsettling. Those who have been in HR have violated employee's rights by disclosing confidential information, conversations and complaints filed to other supervisors and employees in the company. It is a lawsuit waiting to happen. Senior editorial staff discriminate against those they know they can while they power trip and do the least amount of work possible, taking credit for the hard work of the staff that works under them. It is so frustrating when you know you can't speak to your own supervisor or HR about anything. This comes at no surprise, but SB pays sub par salaries and barely gives standard PTO. Benefits are horrible, HR isn't there to help if needed, and upper management will find a reason to inhibit you from having a career here. Expect to work here for a year then plan on leaving - trust me. So glad I left.

Pros

In hindsight, I'm not sure if there were any apart from some friendly coworkers.

Cons

I infuriatingly see promotions handed out left and right via LinkedIn, but just know that actually being someone to get to that level means literally grovelling and being lucky enough to be in the good graces of the egotistical CEO. Upper management brown-noses her as their main job, and they will prevent you from any upward mobility if you're not one of her favorites (which seems to be picked based on how much you kiss up to her, and if you keep your own opinions to yourself, and other factors entirely unrelated to your actual performance). Absolutely criminally high monthly healthcare premiums, paired with insanely high deductibles, bare-minimum PTO, and mat leave. HR is a joke and not one HR employee seems to last very long. Salaries are abysmal, even by publishing standards. Most books acquired are bottom-of-the-barrel since they don't pay most of their authors much, and they have to be edited within an inch of their lives to be readable and marketable. I left the industry after this company and have never been happier.
