Toxic Culture Overrides Mission - Childcare Director Jeremiah Program Employee Review

Pros

Benefits are good for a non-profit, week off during the holidays and in July.

Cons

Extremely toxic work environment starts at the top and trickles down to all of the leadership level. Atmosphere for lower level employees is do what you are told, no matter what best practice might be. Leadership holds no space for employee experience or perspective on the way they should do their job. Leaders with no direct line experience call the shots while running over good employees with experience and expertise to do the job. Quarterly employee surveys mean nothing. They are a box to check to show the board and investors that they engage with staff. Anyone over the executive director level do not care about campus level staff, just the current narrative and mission, and that's it. I would strongly advise against working here until major changes are made.

Pros

Jeremiah Program is super mission-driven, and it shows in the passion of the staff. The team culture is supportive and collaborative, and the people you meet are genuinely amazing. Chastity, the CEO, is great. She’s warm and welcoming, even hugs you just to say hello and thank you without asking about your position and title. I have never had this experience with a CEO and it makes you feel seen. The work is really rewarding, and the kids are the absolute best part. Hearing their stories makes it worth it if you love this work. The community support is awesome as well.

Cons

There are huge challenges with structure, communication, and workload balance. Processes aren’t always clear, which can make things inefficient depending on the team or department. Staff retention is talked about a lot, but follow-through is inconsistent. There’s also a communication gap between CST and onsite staff that hasn’t really changed over the years I've been here. The workload and pressure can be intense, and burnout is real—I honestly felt more burned out here than anywhere else I’ve worked. There are basically no professional growth opportunities, and it’s hard to see a long-term path within the company.
