Pros

Working with a wide variety of technologies and vertical markets (keeps it interesting and provides opportunity to mitigate economic cycles). Great name and brand to be associated with. The majority of individual contributor employees are team players and want to help you make the company successful.

Cons

Internal processes are suffocating. Funding cuts and headcount freezes, and layoffs w/o back-fill are stifling progress. Promotions appear to go to leaders who manage-up, play manipulative politics and shamelessly self-promote at the expense of their teams. There is little reward/recognition for building strong teams and developing your people. Meeting people who bought the stock at $80, $50, or $30.

Advice to Management

Purging the badly conceived boards and councils is a good step, but unfortunately much of the damage has been done to unravel the culture of innovation and empowerment. Micro-management IBM-style financial controls are causing much of the customer and employee pain - give more decision power to those closes to the customer. Cisco-on-Cisco IT used to be a great source of pride and a great reference and proof point for our customers; dysfunctional assimilation of Tandberg is a prime example. HR systems are overly complicated and don't contribute to employee satisfaction.

    Pros

I feel that Cisco provide me with the opportunity to enrich my skills. I like working there so much . It is very fun.

    Cons

It is to big of a company to get any attention from the company. There is no intimacy level with the workers.

    Advice to Management

people need to stop cutting on the jobs. We need to improve the system. I think we should start with lower management.

    Disapproves of CEO

    Pros

    1. provides university tuition assistance 2. flexible work hours 3. has invested in lots of software tools and infrastructure - good place to self learn quite a few new technologies 4. the top management tries to spread the gospel of fair play and fairness among the lower rungs - but the middle level management from Director down is really very mediocre

    Cons

    1. A hub center of political activity 2. most engineers are of very mediocre quality - could do with better hiring process 3. very mediocre directors and managers - most have them are past retirement age and dont bring in any value 4. Its who you know that matters than what you know, when it comes to career growth 5. typical culture of slavery - a very concentration of a particular ethnic community within all projects - not much diversity 6. strictly not recommended as an exciting work place

    Advice to Management

get rid of these multi tiers of management - bring out the directors from their glass door and have them talk to the technologists directly - get rid of middle level management Cisco is at least 5 years behind the industry in terms of its services implementation and advise to bring in hard core technologists and get rid of the managers and old architects who do not deliver world class products
