I worked at Edmonton Khalsa School full-time
Decent pay and benefits
Strong religious department holds many interesting events and ceremonies throughout the school year
Sometimes provides a free lunch for staff
Out of date reporting systems
Inconsitent and unprofessional administration (apathetic)
Shows no respect to teaching staff (no prep time, demeaning staff meetings)
Demanding of time on weekends and evenings (for no additional compensation)
No future planning strategies or plans
Minimum grade averages are 80% (those who don't meet this are fired)
FSA/Provincial exam scores must be 10% above provincial average (staff who don't meet this are fired)
Shows no understanding of current educational practices or trends
Advice to Management
Student and staff retention is a huge problem; 50% staff turnover every 6 months is not normal for a school. Open an honest, safe discussion with staff and students and forget the ego of the Board of Trustees- the board needs to realize they are running a school and students/staff are not pawns to be played with and disposed of at a whim.
