I worked at Eastern Mediterranean University full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Salary is mostly paid on time and academics enjoy 13-month salary. If you are a full time academic and can play the local politics you will be fine.

    Cons

The University lacks highly talented research faculty. Most of the faculty members are locals that are promoted to high academic ranks (Asst, Assoc and full professors) without academic or research qualifications.

    - All graduates of the university, even the best brains are not retained but chased off since almost all the locals hate SUCCESS.

-The University DONT employ foreigners and will only employ unsucceful foreigners in the worst case.

    - Lots of unqualified staffs members that could not even write an abstract are promoted to Professor and Associate professorship.

-The university is more of teaching and very low in research since they do not invest on equipments and talents.

    - Lots of old faculties are beign recycled even after they re 80 years old.

    - The university is designed only for undergraduate or maximum, A Master Degree but NOT PhD degree. Most Phd students self-supervised themselves.

    Advice to Management

Focus on recruiting highly talented foreigners, retain your best graduates and invest heavily on research equipments.

    Pros

Cyprus is a beautiful place to live, in my opinion. Provident fund and interest-based accounts allows one to put together a package over the years.

    Cons

No job security, especially for Western foreigner faculty. Rife with nepotism. Large numbers of native faculty of low calibre; best native academics chose not to work there. Often seems like a make-believe university.

    Advice to Management

Treat your Western faculty with greater respect -- they earned it.

    Positive Outlook

I worked at Eastern Mediterranean University part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Motivating staff which are made up of dynamic youths, hard-working management. For a student job, it was really a great opportunities to train their future graduates.

    Cons

Low compensation but not bad for a student position. Low or almost no opportunity for students to be employed after graduation.

    Advice to Management

Try to trust the students you employ more by enabling them to participate in important projects. Give them an opportunity to contribute to decision making that can help the university improve.
