I have been working at ENMAX full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

ENMAX is always changing and growing providing different opportunities for employees who want to develop and be innovative. There are many perks - career development / career growth, in house training or external educational training, volunteer opportunities, working with professional people, bonuses, stability, time off, on site cafe, dry cleaning, free parking, on site gym and fitness classes, on site day care, wellness room, wellness programs such as the apply lady, company celebrations and more.

    Cons

There are times we lack direction and communication like most organizations but if we want to be a leader in the industry we could improve on this. Also, people taking all the benefits we have for granted.

    Advice to Management

Great leaders across the organization that show they trust and care for their teams in turn creating high performing teams. There are other leaders that have signed up to be a leader and have the opportunity to step up and engage, motivate and develop their teams. As well as contribute and build on the culture we have.

I worked at ENMAX full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Top pay in Calgary Decent benefits Non downtown location with free parking You can earn top dollar while never having to travel, be very good at your job, or work very hard. If you are good at politics and managing up, you will have a very lucrative career here.

    Cons

If office politics aren't your thing, you'll be immensely frustrated. Most creative ideas are squashed at the executive table as the company is afraid to try anything new or novel. New employees quickly learn not to think outside the box as the culture of finger pointing and sabotage is deep, particularly toward those who are good at what they do. Bullying behaviour is rampant among leadership and well known and protected up to the top level. In many departments, no one has any interest in promotion as there is a 'hunger games' atmosphere toward new leaders. I've watched so many of my favourite colleagues become promoted and then immediately sabotaged. Instead of addressing the real deficits in the organization, there is just constant turn-over where the quality of employees, particularly leaders, deteriorates. This is most evident at the executive team, which looks very different than it did 5 years ago. This is a company with deep pockets, as the money comes from Calgary tax payers, so they can afford to constantly pay severance and try again. While the culture and people suffer. Enmax has gone from a good Calgary company to an American nightmare so quickly people are reeling and starting to jump ship now that the economy has improved. Turnover in some shared services under certain leaders should raise questions. But someone needs to care and pay attention first.

    Advice to Management

So long as they're still creating their own huge bonuses, there is no need for leadership to improve themselves. The board needs to pay attention to what is really going on and ask some hard questions. Don't take everything that is presented to you at face value no matter how pretty the graph is.

    I worked at ENMAX

    Pros

Nice vacation time. Constant communication with management Really nice to have your own building with free parking and it's own cafeteria.

    Cons

The union can get in the way of bringing in top talent due to seniority and bumping. If work balance is essential this may be your place but not if your building a career

    Advice to Management

Find a way a better way to incentivize your non managements staff. Make it so that your corporate staff aren't considered union staff

I worked at ENMAX full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Vacation: ENMAX offers a massive amount of vacation to employees. Between actual paid vacation, flex days and holiday shut down, ENMAX employees rival school teachers with the amount of time off available to them. Work/Life Balance: If an employee manages themselves correctly there is no reason to be working more than a 40 hour work week. Facility: Decent on-site cafeteria, gym, day care and free parking help make this place bearable.

    Cons

Lack of leadership: ENMAX has lots of managers but not lots of leaders. A good leader would actually talk to their team instead of sitting at their desk trying to set a personal best high score in candy crush. Everyone acknowledges this person does this and yet somehow it is OK??? Perhaps less time on candy crush and more time on strategy and planning would ensure ENMAX was actually a market leader instead of a follower. Reactive: No surprise that when you have a lack of good leaders and unqualified managers, you spend most of your time in a reactive mode instead of setting the pace for the rest of the market. As a result, instead of careful planning and execution, you get rushed projects by people who are stressed out because they weren’t prepared. Terrible culture: People spend more of their time worried about internal politics vs. just getting the job done the best they can. Unless you’re well liked by a small influential group you won’t make it anywhere at this place. Decision making: Painfully slow for even simple things and once a decision is made it has to be continually justified instead of making progress on the project. Tenure and lack differentiated experience: Far too many employees that have been around for a long time and only have ENMAX as their career experience. Great to have that knowledge but it kills innovation.

    Advice to Management

Flatten the org structure. There are so many (unqualified) middle managers in this place it’s ridiculous! There is no need to have a team lead, a manager and director all reporting into a VP who reports into an SVP. More time is spent managing up than being productive. Just hire competent people into manager roles vs. promoting unqualified people who have been there a long time and you will see productivity increase and costs go down (you could easily eliminate the entire director level and not miss a thing).

I worked at ENMAX for more than 5 years

    Pros

Invests in their staff and provides opportunities for training and professional development. Salary good, free parking, on site gym. Health benefits average but not great. Amazing managers during my time there. Open access to Directors and VPs.

    Cons

CUPE union in place. Inconsistent application of PD policy. Internal promotions limited to favorites, not actually open to everyone who is qualifies. Post positions when they should just promote the person they already chose. Missing opportunities for efficiencies and best-in-class program as Generation and Power sides won't play nicely together. Too many Americans in leadership roles. Executive leadership were once engaged but vanished in 2015. Communications also stopped killing morale.

    Advice to Management

Get rid of CUPE so employees can be hired/fired/ promoted based on their performance and not based on tenure. Get back in touch with staff. Revise the variable pay program so that people who truly deserve a 4 get it without a limitation of x per group.

    I worked at ENMAX

    Pros

Excellent pay, benefits and perks. Free parking, outside downtown core for easy commuting, on-site gym, open floor plan work environment great for meeting other people in the company. Many great people to work with.

    Cons

Americanization of culture over past 5 years has dramatically changed the work environment and overall morale. The worst result of this is the preaching of one set of leadership attributes while promoting and rewarding people who operate under an entirely different set of values.

    Advice to Management

My advice would be to the mayor and board of directors to take a much closer look at what has happened to their beloved city owned utility company and decide if it is truly being run the way they have been told it is.

I have been working at ENMAX

    Pros

Fellow employees are fantastic, onsite daycare, new renos of head office and onsite cafeteria, free parking, time off over Christmas break.

    Cons

Beaurocracy, micromanagement, lack of communication, total disregard for employees, many managers and leaders operate as bullies. Alot of the reasons people used to want to work for ENMAX have slowly and surely been taken away. It feels like there is no heart there anymore.

    Advice to Management

You've stated our values. Try showing the employees that you actually believe them.
