    Pros

    Great Pay and Benefits
Great People with passion and skills
Good CEO that seems to be in touch and care.

    Cons

Can be political at times in some departments.

    Advice to Management

Senior execs should keep focussing on communication with frontlines and ensure that employee engagement remains a priority. I saw this get better and better over the years. Focus on change readiness to ensure initiatives go smoothly.

    Pros

    Pros

    Nice vacation time.
    Constant communication with management
Really nice to have your own building with free parking and it's own cafeteria.

    Cons

The union can get in the way of bringing in top talent due to seniority and bumping.
If work balance is essential this may be your place but not if your building a career

    Advice to Management

Find a way a better way to incentivize your non managements staff. Make it so that your corporate staff aren't considered union staff

I worked at ENMAX Corporation full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Vacation: ENMAX offers a massive amount of vacation to employees. Between actual paid vacation, flex days and holiday shut down, ENMAX employees rival school teachers with the amount of time off available to them.

Work/Life Balance: If an employee manages themselves correctly there is no reason to be working more than a 40 hour work week.

Facility: Decent on-site cafeteria, gym, day care and free parking help make this place bearable.

    Cons

Lack of leadership: ENMAX has lots of managers but not lots of leaders. A good leader would actually talk to their team instead of sitting at their desk trying to set a personal best high score in candy crush. Everyone acknowledges this person does this and yet somehow it is OK??? Perhaps less time on candy crush and more time on strategy and planning would ensure ENMAX was actually a market leader instead of a follower.

Reactive: No surprise that when you have a lack of good leaders and unqualified managers, you spend most of your time in a reactive mode instead of setting the pace for the rest of the market. As a result, instead of careful planning and execution, you get rushed projects by people who are stressed out because they weren’t prepared.

Terrible culture: People spend more of their time worried about internal politics vs. just getting the job done the best they can. Unless you’re well liked by a small influential group you won’t make it anywhere at this place.

Decision making: Painfully slow for even simple things and once a decision is made it has to be continually justified instead of making progress on the project.

Tenure and lack differentiated experience: Far too many employees that have been around for a long time and only have ENMAX as their career experience. Great to have that knowledge but it kills innovation.

    Advice to Management

Flatten the org structure. There are so many (unqualified) middle managers in this place it’s ridiculous! There is no need to have a team lead, a manager and director all reporting into a VP who reports into an SVP. More time is spent managing up than being productive. Just hire competent people into manager roles vs. promoting unqualified people who have been there a long time and you will see productivity increase and costs go down (you could easily eliminate the entire director level and not miss a thing).

I have been working at ENMAX Corporation full-time

    Pros

Great vacation policy and generally a good work/life balance
Bonuses are always high (half of upper management's compensation is in bonus so they always find a way "exceed expectations", one year I believe that meeting the financial goals was simply to break even)
The company is vertically integrated so it's possible to get experienced in a variety of areas and it's relatively easy to move around if you're motivated
Many of the employees are genuinely good people and great to work with
    Strong safety culture
Once had a great EIT program

    Cons

The culture has been changing for the worse in the last years. All of the changes have been small and not enough on their own to lead to many employees leaving but if things don't change I expect a mass exodus especially of engineers and especially once the economy improves. Many very strong engineers have left the company in the last year, even in this poor economy.

    This has included:
Reducing cubicle size and the number of barriers between cubicles which makes it harder to focus and reduces privacy (especially hard on introverts)
Almost constant re-orgs of the engineering teams
Wage freezes for engineers but not union employees which has expanded the existing and massive pay discrepancy--many union positions which require only a college diploma make significantly more than senior engineers for example
Six years ago, the company changed the titles of all engineers, but not increasing pay; intermediate engineers were called senior engineers and HR is now stipulating that all senior engineers must have seven years of post P.Eng. experience and is not taking performance into account. This effectively eliminates our ability to be promoted for seven years which is extremely demotivating for young engineers and leads to engineers with experience but not necessarily strong performance being promoted.
No ability to renegotiate salary while in a role
Changing the safety culture to blaming the person that was hurt
The elimination of team building activities that appeal to younger employees like the ski day

    Advice to Management

Pay engineers fairly for their experience and bring salaries in line with union counterparts
When it comes to promotions take performance into account; experience does not equal strong performance.
Work to improve company culture through activities for employees like ski days and the corporate challenge
Introduce an intermediate engineer role with the pay scale of the current senior engineer role so that engineers have the ability to move up in the company and introduce this ahead of enforcing rules on years of experience.

    Pros

Good benefits and vacation, good pay, our new CEO is starting to implement a lot of her changes, there's been a recent cleanup of management and there's actually a focus now which I haven't seen there before. Union leadership and negotiators have changed recently, meaning easier and more productive negotiations.

Amazing safety culture, a constant drive for volunteerism, and knowing that the leadership is actually trying to make things better for Albertans makes you feel OK coming to work,

    Cons

Constantly struggling to work from home, even occasionally, but that's just because of the union. ENMAX is all for people working from home where appropriate. There's also some politics, but soooooo much less than there used to be. I think we're all getting on the same page now.
