I worked at ELS Educational Services full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Many students are engaged in learning. Enjoyable to be in the classroom.

    Cons

Curriculum is outdated: teaching business professionals with cassette tapes? Management treat staff inconsistently and regularly interact with "favourites". Management are interested in numbers and money solely. Regularly promote students who have not achieved the next level in order to keep students in the school and make more money off of them. Teachers are expected to set rules in the class, yet they don't allow you to apply the rules if the students parents complain. The structure is brutal and likely against labour law codes: they will call you the night before to let you know whether you will have a job for the next month or not. Management treat the workplace like an episode of Survivor where they gossip about other staff to other staff in order to see who they should vote off next. Unless you are a favourite, you could lose your job at any time. No job security.

I have been working at ELS Educational Services full-time for more than a year

    Pros

The work is rewarding, management is super supportive. It's a really fun career.

    Cons

Corporate does not care about employees at all. There's no support for management so centers are left to figure things out for themselves. Instructors aren't paid at all for planning or grading which takes hours now that class sizes have increased. Updates to curriculum and online platforms are run out without proper development or troubleshooting, and centers are left to defend themselves against students' disappointment even though they have no control over these high-level decisions.

I worked at ELS Educational Services full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

The diversity of students was an education for me! Most of them were highly motivated to learn, too.

    Cons

Terrible management, both local and corporate. Inconsistent hours because hours are dependent on enrollment and enrollment is dropping like a rock. Corporate, in good times and bad, seemed unsupportive of local management and teachers. Local management at my center was originally just kind of weird, then those folks left and were replaced by a director who had NO qualifications or credentials. He socialized with some students outside school hours while ignoring other students quite completely. He was the same way with teachers, going out drinking with some while cutting or chastising others, sometimes within hearing/observation of students. The pay is poor and there is absolutely no acknowledgement of the extra work teachers put in doing planning , evaluating and grading. Since each session lasts just 4 weeks, it is intense with planning and evaluation/grading a constant demand. Students who are buddies with the director can talk to him and get grades changed. Teacher hours depend on enrollment, so hours can change every four weeks. This is really bad since you cannot depend on a regular income.
